in order...and a great top 5 to be honest...

1.Nicholas
2.McAvennie
3.McLair
4.Merde
5.McGarvey
Some people wonder why we get so upset when we have been reading teamsheets over the last 3 or 4 years.
Exactly.

When you compare that lot to some of the rancid pish that we have had to endure in recent years, it's depressing :nono:
The sad fact is that excellent Scottish strikers - who just happened to be mad tims - were falling out the trees in the 80s.

Leave out the Celtic guys and you had Sharp and Gray at Everton, Dalglish and Wark - 20 goals a season from midfield - Robertson at Hearts, McDougall, McGhee, Black at the Sheep and even McCoist - who didn't get a sniff of a Scotland place until the late 80s.

Make no apologies for repeating the fact that Kevin Kyle has more Scotland caps than McAvennie.

to be fair, didnt the bold frank get banned? by roxburgh? sure i heard something about him being given a black felt tip pen and being told to colour in the shoelaces or something of that ilk.

frank being the bold and fierceless wasnt soon in telling schoolteacher andy where to go with that one.

oh, and of course there was the australian trip along with merde and chick nick too. quality days!

Petit merde
Sadly, this may be correct.

His two goals for Scotland against Spain (albeit overshadowed by a goal from a rather better player ;) ) showed just how much quality this bloke had.

In his feet. Not in his head

Le Merde ? The man is beneath contempt and as such does not exist.

I'm still gutted that our fanatstic team goal in the 5-0 win to win the league in 86 at love street was scored by that carrot. almost spoils the world class build up play (but not quite!)

I`m basing this only what I have personally witnessed. My memories of Nicholas in the Hoops are entirely from his second spell with us so that rules him out for me. I appreciate he was an excellent player first time round but I was too young to see him then, I have vague recollections of McGarvey and the guy we sold to Nantes so again they`re both a no no for me.
It boils down to McClair and McAvennie and as good as McClair was it`s Frankie boy for me. I was 10 during the centenary season and although Joe Miller was my favorite player back then there seemed to be something magical about McAvennie, we were never beat with him in the team and that was never more evident than on one glorious Saturday afternoon at Hampden.
Macca for me as well. He should have been made Pope in 1988.

Macca in the centenary season was amazing - best all round striker for me but mainly for that season in a Celtic shirt.

Charlie was class - but again mainly for that one season for us after his leg break.

Mclair was consistent over his seasons with us - not an amazing footballer but clever and clinical - always thought he was respected rather than loved by our support - should have blessed yourself when asked Brian

McGarvey was my favourite - I know he wasn't the best in that company but he tried all game every game was a good scorer and he was so unpredictable - used to love watching really good defenders like Hegarty , Narey , McLeish and Miller try to figure out what he was going to do.

I know that Andy Walker only ever had one good season for us but he was very good that season and deserves a mention.... Charlie Nicholas should never have gone to Arsenal.

Brian McClair was better than Macca I'd say. McAvennie was great in the centenary season but even then there was a long stretch in the last third of the season where he never scored. Loved the double in the Scottish Cup final.

Charlie Nicholas, by a distance.

Although I can see why people are going for both Macca and McClair, I think Charlie's abilities as a striker get overlooked because he had so much else to his game too.

Being a magnificent goalscorer was only a wee part of what he could do.
