It's close. McAvennie, McClair, Johnston & Nicholas were all top class. Today I'll go for McAvennie but will change my mind tomorrow.

Charlie Nic for me on his first outing. Is Dalglish too long ago for this thread? If not him too.

Edit since 80's

I'll go for a popular answer and say Charlie Nic.

But just to be controversial I'll say second time around.

Looking at the Scottish born strikers we've had since that period it makes you realise just how long it is since we've had a decent one...

Alan McInally, Tommy Coyne, George McCluskey, Chris Hay, Darren Jackson, Simon Donnelly, Mark Burchill, Willie Falconer, Derek Riordan, Craig Beattie, Kenny Misser etc

My vote would be for Charlie Nicholas. Back then I thought he'd become one of the greatest players in England ever.

I`m basing this only what I have personally witnessed. My memories of Nicholas in the Hoops are entirely from his second spell with us so that rules him out for me. I appreciate he was an excellent player first time round but I was too young to see him then, I have vague recollections of McGarvey and the guy we sold to Nantes so again they`re both a no no for me.
It boils down to McClair and McAvennie and as good as McClair was it`s Frankie boy for me. I was 10 during the centenary season and although Joe Miller was my favorite player back then there seemed to be something magical about McAvennie, we were never beat with him in the team and that was never more evident than on one glorious Saturday afternoon at Hampden.
