Moving The Goalposts; Changes to football we've hardly noticed

That's the way it crumbles... cookie-wise.

Talking to a mate yesterday about old Scottish Cup finals and we got a bit sidetracked when he mentioned how much he missed the old press box at Hampden.

For those who can't remember the press box it was this huge rickety shed, adorned with two long rows of windows, which seemed perilously perched on the main stand roof. It appeared to have been built tilting forward and always looked as if it was set to crash to earth at any moment. My mate said he was fascinated by it as a youngster and would spend ages staring at it in the expectancy it would topple off the roof at any moment. He said he had alaways refused to go in the main stand as he believed death by press box was imminent and inevitable.

To be honest until he mentioned it I had almost forgotten it was ever there. Yet it was probably once the most iconic features of the stadium. That got me thinking as to what other changes have happened to the game which most of us have forgot about or perhaps never even noticed. One thing I came up with was goalposts.

At the risk of going all Ron Mananger, there was a time when a set of goalposts at a ground were almost as unique as a club's kit. No set appeared the same. Yet now they all seem identical. It seems such a tiny little thing but its another bit of identity and character squeezed from the game.

I remember the goals at the old Wembley were very neat. Quite shallow and tidy. At least until the Scotland fans got their hands on them. The box shape we see loads of today were once for just more exotic climes. World Cup qualifiers in distant lands and rare brief glimpses of continetial games at the end of Football Focus.

As a young kid cheering on Celtic in the early 80s my undoubted favourites were the Hampden goalposts. The vast concrete bowl which was the old Hampden had a lot wrong with it but its sheer size was always impressive. From the terracing to the pitch, everything seemed massive and the goalposts were no different. They consisted of a huge wooden frame with the sturdiest of square posts*. They looked solid, intimidating even. You wouldn’t want to get into a fight with the Hampden goalposts.

The nets attached to these monstrous structures were equally impressive. They were cast over a deep arcing frame and seemed to cover acres of land behind the posts (I’m pretty sure you could have built another stadium in the space between goal-line and the ‘back of the net’).

If I remember rightly, for much of the 80s Celtic favoured what was then an increasingly popular design of goalpost. This was a basic frame constructed from tubular steel with an elongated D shape protruding from the points where posts met crossbar. I seem to remember on one occasion a superb rising drive from Davie Provan (I think) flashed past the keeper and, to the delight of everyone, became firmly lodged in the D.

Also, and I'm sure this will surprise no one, but if I remember rightly Hibs were first side to have green nets!

*Although I remember them from the early 80s I am certain these goalposts were present at Hampden long before then. I’ve also read somewhere that St Etienne and the French press blamed the square Hampden posts for their European Cup final defeat to Bayern Munich in 1976.

Anyway, what little change to football do you miss?

Aye, you don't see many sets of goals with years and years worth of gaffer tape hanging off the crossbar these days.

To answer the question, I miss the times I used to look forward to football. Now there is so much on TV that oversaturation has dulled my enjoyment.
It used to be you pencilled in the "big" games you would make a point of watching months in advance. Now, there's something on every night.

I also miss playing 11s.

Agree 100%.

It might sound daft - ungrateful? - but there was something special about the old three European trophies format when you had all the games played on the same night (Wednesday) and you had to wait for Sportsnight just to get a snatch of the highlights.

The Parkheid floodlight pylons...when we were bairns going to a mid week euro game you could see the floodlights from miles away and to a wee nipper like myself the sight was with wonder!
Also on big match days the nutters who used to risk life & limb by climing up them for a better view was a sight to behold.

Players with their socks rolled down around their ankles - Vialli, Waddle, Provan, even Joe Miller. You just don't see it anymore.

Getting the Evening Times late edition on a Saturday on the way home from the game and looking for the other scores at the bottom of the back page.

Scoring in a game against der Hun while standing in the Jungle - being propelled forward about 20 yards worth of terracing by the celebrations, then being swept back to your original position again just as quickly. Scary as a kid, but I grew to love it.

Did Gordon McQueen not have a fight with said goalposts in the run up to the 1978 world cup, effectively ruling him out for the Argentinian adventure?

The thing I remember from days of old is the rows and rows of the wee blue three wheelers you used to get at the games, seemed to be hundreds of the things at Celtic park and Hampden. Mind you Hampden had the space to fit in a car-park between the pitch and the stands. Beaten to it by Mr Balde
