Neville Ferdinand Evans (wee Brazilian baw bag)
nani carrick scholes giggs
berbatov owen

bit of licence used there, some of those players are amazing on their day but others are just over hyped and useless, giggs and scholes are past it and strolling around on former glory, neville was always useless, carricks not worth half the money, berbatov only shows up when he fancies it, Owen's hamstrings are made of crepe paper and he doesn't score enough, and the rest don't need explianation

Quoting limited to 3 levels deep
Sorry but Given is unproven at the highest levels: Europe, international tournaments, top end of the Premiership.

Every team he has played for have shipped loads of goals, he doesn't come off his line for crosses and doesn't command his defence ala Schmeichel.

On his record thus far he doesn't deserve to be considered one of the greatest in the world and is therefore over rated
Newcastle challenged for the title a few times when he was there, and City are challenging for a Top 4 place just now. Newcastle's challenge fell away because of injuries to the strikers, not cos Given was chucking the ball in his own net.
It's fair to say that that's the, 'top end of the Premiership,' part of your argument dealt with.

He has had three or four Champions League campaigns, and Newcastle reached the latter stages of the UEFA Cup on one occasion, bowing out to Drogba's Marseilles.
So he's fairly, 'proven,' in Europe.

He played at the 2002 World Cup, where Ireland went out in the Last 16 to Spain on penalties. He has over 100 caps.
I don't know if you want him to have seen more international competition than that.

And I'm not Irish, but I can only think of three more consistent EPL goalkeepers in the last decade: VDS, Cech, Reina.

As he meets all your qualifying criteria, is easily one of the Top 5 performers in his position in one of the top leagues in the world, and is at an age where he may mature further, do you have any other criticisms of him?
So in summary:

3 top 4 finishes
2 CL campaigns
1 UEFA Cup campaign
1 World Cup finals appearance

Thats it? In 12 seasons? Thats what puts him up there with Casillas and Buffon? Really?

If you think what he has done in his career so far puts him in the Casillas/Buffon category then fair enough, i'm not gonna waste any more time arguing with you.

And I actually agree that he has been one of the most consistent keepers in the EPL and is certainly in the Top 5 in that league, but i think that it shows him to be very good, just not one of the best in the world

Lots of us on here can't stand them. So, even when the facts are largely glossed over it's ok

I didn't realise we were limiting World Class status to just two individuals, indeed I don't even recall labelling him as world class, nor did I compare him to Buffon or Casillas.
My main problem was with your claim that he is unproven; unsuccessful, certainly :)

But I genuinely don't believe there are a great many goalkeepers in the world better than him, mainly because there aren't a great many decent goalkeepers.

I had in my over-rated team.

When he was a young, speedy winger, his crossing was pish. He was extremely inconsistent. Now he is the English Player of the Year and he played less than 20 games last year  Way over-rated.

PS Man Utd should have been gubbed in their two CL finals.

WTF do Shilton and Jennings have to do with anything? Seriously?

Here is their records anyway:

Shilton- 2 European Cups, 1 League, 1 World Cup semi-final
Jennings- 1 UEFA Cup, 2 FA Cups

In fairness Shiltons record doesn't look too bad does it? Not that i think he was ever one of the best personally, but at least he has done enough at the highest levels of the game to make an informed judgement *shrugs*
