Conventional.

His hairline's receding though so may graduate to unconventional in a few years.

Celtic, Brisbane show how tour should be done

13.07.09 | Chris Beattie

COMMENT: Sunday afternoon at Suncorp stadium was just like a day out at Parkhead.

The stadium was a sea of green and white, which even had Brisbane Roar captain Craig Moore, the former Rangers skipper, admitting the experience had him pining for a return to Scotland.

There was plenty of backslapping among Celtic officials last night - and not only because Tony Mowbray's first game in charge had ended in victory.

Not since David Beckham's LA Galaxy visited Sydney and delivered over $20 million to the local economy has a football tour made such an impact on a city. Working with the tour's organisers and Suncorp stadium, Celtic didn't see the visit as a simple smash-and-grab.

Tony Mowbray took his squad to a local Celtic supporters club for a training session and saw over 2,000 fans flock to see the players go through their paces. A function for over 500 state government and local celebrities included Celtic handing over a $20,000 cheque to a Brisbane charity. Local businesses enjoyed a huge boost as Celtic supporter clubs from as far as Scotland, Canada, Hong Kong and the USA all made the trek to Brisbane for yesterday's game.

Suncorp, in partnership with a committed Celtic, showed how a tour should be organised.

There was no big-name like Beckham to build the tour around. Of course, Celtic's fans will tell you the club's name is enough. But in a city where football is strictly third best, everyone involved had to be committed to the cause - and they were.

This included Mowbray and his players, who were determined to give fans their money's worth.

Contrast this to the attitude down the road at Gold Coast United. While Danny Murphy, the Fulham captain, tried his best to hype up the game and help the organisers, his Gold Coast counterpart Jason Culina chose play it down, running down both the event and Fulham. Is it any wonder less than a third of the crowd Celtic drew attended Gold Coast's coming out party?

Celtic now leave with good memories and the desire to do more business with Brisbane - and the fans yesterday left Suncorp with a rare taste of what happens every home game at Celtic Park. It was a special day, which could only have happened through the willingness of everyone involved to make it a box-office event.

Just as a wee add on. The wife's cousin (born and bred in Brisbane) was the lead Oz contact liaising with Celtic over the visit. His feedback was that the Bhoys could not have done more, holding various community/weans' training sessions and being easilly accessible, etc. He commended Mogga and the rest for their attitudes, making many new freinds and adding more than a few to the Celtic family. Even his Hun colleague had to admit they were a credit to the club!

In the front of the picture with what looks, strangely enough, like a green cassette tape above them.

FFS that pic might have been taken when he was just off the plane. Who the feck knows?

In other news we might be doing more of these due to the crappy tv deal?

www.theage.com.au/news/sport/soccer/agent-wants-celtic-at-mcg/2009/07/16/1247337216419.html

THE FIFA agent who brought Scottish giant Celtic to Brisbane at the weekend and attracted a crowd of more than 31,000 to Suncorp Stadium would like to bring the Bhoys to Melbourne — where he reckons they would pull double the Queensland crowd at the MCG.

Lou Sticca, the Melbourne-based boss of Tribal Sports Management, was the match agent representing Celtic in the negotiations for an Australian game. He said yesterday that the sporting passion and fervour in Victoria, allied to the strong support soccer has in this state, would see the Hoops pull a huge attendance at the MCG or fill Etihad Stadium were they to play Melbourne Victory.

But the State Government would almost certainly have to be involved in underwriting a likely seven-figure sum to attract a club with one of the biggest brand names in the soccer world.

The Queensland Government backed last Sunday's "Roar against Racism" match against Brisbane Roar, which merely provided the opposition but did not carry the financial risk.

Sticca, who was also involved in bringing LA Galaxy and David Beckham to Sydney in November 2007, said he had sought to bring the Scottish powerhouses to Melbourne or Sydney this year, but had gone north when the Queensland authorities showed more enthusiasm for the venture.

Guaranteed.

Just don't have it at the MCG. Worst football stadium I have ever been to.

Now that's more like it!! Next year please?? My oldest son would be old enough to go with me.

Even it was the MCG it wouldn't be bad but I think the new football stadium being built here in Melbourne would be finished by the time we were going to come down here.

By the way is there a mid winter break in the SPL this coming season??
