at least they can afford the risk. if he goes there and plays in single figure number of games ferguson wont lose any sleep over it. cant see it being utd's 'marquee' summer signing after all.

its a risk they can take. i dont think it will pay off spectacularly but it wont do them any harm

If it wasn't for a disaster at Newcastle, he'd still be considered one of the best.
Let's be honest, Newcastle were terrible and he was injured a fair amount of the time.

Good move for him.

Would be an excellent signing for Man Utd.
Disagree. Man utd already have one penalty box striker in berbstov and, whilst he's not been bad, he's certainly not had the impact a striker of his calibre should. Man utd rely on players swapping round and being able to make things happen outside the box - something owen doesn't offer. He never really did when he was at Liverpool, and he certainly doesn't now. He's a good player, but everton or villa would be his level, I think.

i think man united have got too many attackers who like to drop deep and thats why they NEED a penalty box striker, a poacher. Although i dont think owen is the answer i do think thats what they should be looking for, tevez was probably not a priority because of the fact that rooney and berbatov are also players who drop off and when they all do it there was no one ahead of them. hence the reason ronaldo was pushed to center forward because he was a lazy bugger who would sit up to waiting for the ball.

they need another van nistelrooy ideally.

Strange quote on the BBC article which says:

If Ferguson does capture Owen it would be reminiscent of his willingness to take a chance on players with either difficult reputations, such as Eric Cantona, or players that have suffered serious injury problems like Henrik Larsson.

They took Larsson on loan about 5 years after the only major injury of his career. You'd think they'd bought Darren Anderton or something :cuckoo:

Don't think Berbatov and Owen are at all similar as players.

Was just about to point that out myself, crazy writing but perfectly illustrates how insular the english press can be about the game. Heres a guy who between breaking his leg and joining man u played and scored in two world cups, two european championships, won the champions league, scored a double in the uefa cup final and won countless honours both here and spain, but Fergie still took a risk as that leg had not been proven in the premiership. His age might of been seen as a risk but the leg break?

Incidently I think Owen would be a good signing for them providing he steers clear of injurys, would score the goals that keep them ticking over in the Premiership, hes a far better player than Andy Cole and he did okay.

Would be another reason why Michael Owen never could achieve the Liverpool fan favourite status which Fowler had.

There is an element of risk in signing Owen and the question for me is why are United taking it? Why not use the wages freed by the departure of Tevez and Ronaldo to sign someone of their calibre (or did they do that when I was on holiday?)

This might just be a one off but if I were a Utd supporter paying through the nose for my SB it would be ringing alarm bells that their debt, which rose last year in spite of their turnover, has finally caught up with them.

It will be interesting to see who else they sign with Giggs and Scholes moving into the veterans category.

I dont know, I'm sure Man U will still spend big this summer, they bought those relatively unheard of Serbian boys at Xmas for £15 million so i dont think the cheque book is going away yet. This Owen thing has all the hallmarks of one of Ferguson's considered punts (rather than the one he took on Gorum).

Man Utd have got plenty of money to spend.

They are signing Owen because he's 29 and an absolute steal with no fee.

Just as well, cos Berbatov is never a penalty box striker.

He did suffer a serious knee injury in his first season with Barca, he was out from November till the end of that season.

Agreed.

Berbatov isn't a "penalty box striker" :ponder:

Proven international goalscorer available for zilch, and Man U will rotate him anyway so are probably best placed to optimise his fitness, compared to Hull or Everton who would probably expect him to try and play the 90 minutes most weeks.

Good bit of business IMO.

For Manure its a no brainer, very low risk cash wise and the added value of a GIRU Liverpool, who could have taken him given Torres' injuries last year
