Last year Cork City FC were facing liquidation over, among other things, an unpaid taxbill. They needed an immediate cash injection or they faced serious peril of being wound up altogether. Then Reading FC came along in their hour of need and offered the club 200k in exchange for - it turns out - their £650k (10 per cent sell on clause) from any future sale of Kevin Doyle. At this time Doyle had a 6.5m sale clause written into his contract so essentially John Madjeski knew that by capitalising on Cork's dire financial situation he would save Reading almost half a million pounds - money which would have cleared Cork's debt and allow them to trade in the black again.
Right now the club still have an unpaid tax bill of around 250k which is still threatening their existence. Had Cork received what they were entitled to the problems would be completely behind them.
I know some folk will say that this is business but I think it stinks. They got the player for 70k and made a 6.4m profit. You would think that they would be down on their knees thanking Cork but no - in their hour of need they swooped on Leeside to pick meat of the rotting carcas. Reading, in my view, are the typical example of everything that is wrong with football. Scabby bastards.
Thoughts?

That's a bit harsh. So basically Reading voluntarily coughed up 200k last year for a club in trouble, instead of a possible, but by no means definite, 650k at some point in the future?

If Reading were that scummy surely they would have let Cork go out of business and keep the whole transfer fee for themselves?

If Celtic were to do this would anyone have an issue with it. Cork didn't have to accept the offer !

If Celtic done such a thing - and I mean this sincerely - Id hand back my season book. Absolutely appalling way to treat a club on which you made such a huge profit. Niall Quinn and Roy Keane paid way over the odds for Roy O'Donovan to help Cork out. Maybe Im just niave and their are no morals in football any more but imo Reading have acted dispicably.

Maybe Doyle could pay it from the millions he'll now have in the bank?

Morals in Football do you know an agent that could even spell the word ! Surely Doyle aint short of a million or two and could help them out ? Also is Roy Keane not a Cork man when i was over there for a stag do every person i met seemed to be Roy Keanes cousin

I agree.

Cork would have probably gone out of business without Readings cash offer last year and Reading wouldn't have had to pay anything then.

If they are selling players of the quality of Kevin Doyle for £70k in the first place then they only have themseles to blame TBH.

Terrible, absolutely terrible, things like this epitomise everything thats wrong with the game nowadays. Wouldnt it be good p. r. for them to come to a deal with Cork?

It's difficult, Murph. On the one hand, you could say that Reading were opportunistic. But on the other hand, if Cork hadn't received that £200K cash inflow, would they be out of business already?

Cork desperately needed the cash last year and probably bit their hand off! I still hate it when clubs go out of business, though.

I hope they survive somehow.

Clearly they needed the money mate or they wouldnt have accepted it but in light of a 6.3m profit made on Doyle, you would have hoped that Reading would see the 250k which Cork currently need to survive as a spit in the ocean and stumped up. I just hate situations like this - pull the ladder up Jack - especially as Reading made a fortune on Doyle and have another bargain from Cork, Shane Long, still on their books.

In fairness, I believe that one of Doyle's demands upon signing for Wolves is that they play his hometown club Wexford in a friendly.

I've posted a video about the future of the League in another thread, for any interested.
