Im sure my old bhoy told me that Joe Mcbride would have played in front of Steve Chalmers :ponder: ..............anyone

imonly32 csc
Billy McNeill believes so.

I`maYearYounger Csc. ;)
I think most of those around at the time held that belief. My late Dad was at Lisbon and he advocated that.

Have posted it before but I suppose different members read different threads --

When Bertie Auld was asked by Jim Craig if he really thought Joe McBride would have played in Lisbon had he been fit - Bertie being Bertie :worthy: tore Jim Craig a new one by replying ---

"Aye Jim,I am sure Big Jock would have played Joe ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ at Right Back" :o ;)

He was injured at Pittodrie on Hogmanay 1966; he had scored 38 goals by that time... and he still finished the season as top goal scorer. I rember him scoring 4 v St. Mirren in an 8-2 LC Sectional game at CP; he also scored 4 v. Hibs away in a 5-3 win (I think Gordon might have got a hat-trick for Hibs); and he scored at least two in a 5-4 win at Dunfermline when we came back from 4-2 down... one of the best games I've been to for excitement.

Trying to remember my bedtime stories as a kid......but was there last appearence together not a misrebale midweek game when the title was already wrapped up and big jock rolled them out for a farewell :Bye: :worthy: ...........also the next match after Lisbon.....did John Fallon not play instead of Simpson :ponder:
6-1 against Clyde was the last competitve game on May 1st 1971.

Ronnie Simpson was on at kick off and then subbed immediately for Evan Williams.

I believe they played Albion Rovers after that but it was not a competitve match.
Did he actually start that game?
From what I have read I was under the impression he was only there for the warm up?

Not really sure Chris - you may be right - I read it as Stein bringing them together for the last time - Kds Wiki as well.

Lubomirmoravcik will likely know when he is next on this thread.

Going purely from what I have read it appears that they were merely together on the pitch for one last time. Sort of a last hurrah- theatre almost.
Whether he actually started the game I could not say for definate one way or another.

It was the last home game of that season; the main stand and enclosure (now the South Stand) were closed as it was being re-built during the close season; you had the strange sight of the teams coming onto the pitch walking over a precariously-built walkway across a building site... Ok, I'm being generous: it was a couple of scaffolding battens strategically placed on a couple of mounds of debris.

I don't think Faither played in the game itself.

Probably memory playing tricks, but I thought last Lions game was vs Clyde at Shawfield, score 1-6 or 1-7 (travelled as guest of EK Westwood CSC bus).

I had heard once before it was Shawfield but it is down in Lunney's book (which is usually bang on) as Celtic Park with a crowd of 35000.

Scorers - Lennox3,Wallace2,Chalmers.

bobbybhoy says his dad :bawman: was there.

Anybody else know?

Williams is listed as the keeper.

Was definitely Celtic Park- have checked with numerous different books, websites, Celtics official records, and all have it listed as Celtic Park.
The attendance, as you mentioned earlier CB, was quoted as around the 35,000 mark.

Yes - as Bobbybhoy describes - the South Stand was knocked down at the time - final home game of the season.

Ronnie Simpson did not play in the match but he joined in the pre-match warm up.
Also he led the team out that day.
