Questions.

Is he still contracted to us? If so, when does that contract run out? This 1 yr extension he supposedly has in his Celtic contract, do we invoke that or the player?

Hes out of contract as far as I know. But I'm pretty sure we still hold his media rights and that is worth a few bob.

The one year extension kicked in last summer. It's over now.

Whoever buys him will still need to get the media rights off us.

Would like to see Naka for one more season, especially under Mowbray.

I would like to see Naka stay for another year. If only to see how he responds under a different manager. What age is he 30? 31 maybe. In no way is he past it.
Last season wasn`t his best but that does not mean to say a new manager could not get the best out of him.

He's a cracking wee player but he has been carrying injuries for a long, long time and his dedication to the Japanese national team means he never gets the chance to rest up. If he stays here for another season I think he could do himself some serious damage.

I think he's probably got another one or two seasons in him if we play him in behind the strikers with less defensive duties. He's obviously a more than capable playmaker who still has an eye for a pass and is probably still fitter than most at the club. What he does need though, is a rest and a holiday! His poor set piece taking from last season can probably be attributed to tiredness I'd say...Would be sad to see him go tbh.

As shunghirl says, it's only a couple of papers reporting this... but as I said before, I find it really curious that after Japan's games recently, and he was interviewed afterwards (having played really really well), no-one asked him about the situation, neither did the commentators mention it throughout the game or talk about it afterwards ! Given that the Japanese football season is already a couple of months underway, and Nakamura is the prodigal son... I find it astonishing that no-one was talking about it!. Now with the medical at Yokohama being cancelled, it really does look like the talks have broken down ('ruptured' - direct translation - makes me laugh  !). He is being offered a 2 year deal at Espanyol - not sure how much it's worth though!

Media aren't saying anything about Celtic (between the lines you might read into that, that they fully expect him to leave), but in general we are held in very high esteem here in Japan and most people have us as a foreign team which they like - but that doesn't mean much really as they also like Chelsea, Liverpool and Manure, Barca, Real and Bayern!!!

Regarding his image rights... now I have no direct knowledge of the deal we have with him... but... just before he signed for us, we (Tokyo CSC) were contacted by people at Celtic to give an opinion on marketing out here. I was told that in buying his image rights - a totally seperate deal to his playing contract - Celtic were looking to capitalise on this because Reggina hadn't managed to do this at all because Shunsuke retained his own image rights with them. I don't know if there is/was a time limit set ie concurrent with his playing contract, but I do know we paid a hell of a lot and were quite pleased with the deal we got at the time. Shunsuke's profile has risen quite substantially since he's been with us and as has been speculated, we have probably made a good deal of money out of it. It's only my opinion, but I don't believe there is a time limit on the deal, I believe (through what I heard at the time), that we retain his image rights until he or another club buy them back from us, regardless of whether he plays for us! If this is the case we'll certainly be looking for a great deal more than we paid for them. Apparently Shunsuke played hardball with us over buying them, so I hope we will be equally hard of selling them back!

He has had a poor season by his own standards and particularly since the beginning of the year he has looked like he was already on his way out, but I believe he would still be a great asset to us next season. In my humble opinion, he would be crazy to go off to Spain where the football is very different, he doesn't know the language (don't start with the 'can't speak English - he can get by fine but chooses not to), or the club, manager and players, have to strike up a good rapport with another interpreter and will most probably not start a lot of games... compared to - stay at Celtic where he is happy and comfortable on and off the park, great relationship with the club, manager (ooops strike that!), and players, his interpreter has become his best friend and trusts him implicitly and he has been a first pick every time he's been fit! But... he's a bit weird - my own personal experience of him - so he'll probably go to Spain! :Bye:

Soccer: Nakamura making Yokohama play waiting game
11 June 2009
Provided by: Kyodo News

YOKOHAMA, June 11 -- Yokohama F Marinos club president Masaharu Saito on Thursday admitted ''unforeseen problems'' have stalled negotiations to bring Celtic midfielder Shunsuke Nakamura back to the club that launched his career but was optimistic a deal would eventually be reached.
''At this point in time we still have no answer (from Nakamura's representatives). We have tried to put together the best offer we can and are just waiting for a reply,'' said Saito.
''There have been unforeseen problems and that is why discussions are taking longer than first expected. But I believe we will soon get the answer we are hoping for.''
Nakamura has expressed a desire to return to the J-League club he left seven years ago to pursue a career in Europe. He has previously spoken of the rigors of traveling back and forth for international duty and wants to raise his young children in Japan.
Celtic are attempting to keep Nakamura, who is also reportedly being targeted by Spanish side Espanyol, but the 30-year-old has been noncommittal when asked about what course of action he will take for next season.
Nakamura moved to Scotland before the 2005-2006 season from Italian club Reggina and has since been pivotal in Celtic's largely successful campaigns in the domestic league and other competitions during his time at Parkhead.

So, you gonna stick with the Celtic Shungirl, or, as a read at the time, do Naka's fans follow him wherever he goes?

We've still got the Okay Koki. :)
