He never dominated any centre halves he played against. For a guy of his size he never put himself about.

He gave Ferdinand a torrid time in the 2-3 game.
An absolute myth. Ferdinand misjudged 1 high ball, JVoH wasn't heard of for the remainder of the game.
Ok then.

He scored the same amount of Euro goals for us that Barry Robson did.

Even Kenny Miller outscored him in that dept.

A big disappointment in my book.

Scored some important goals and scored some good goals.

Led the line fairly well for two years, and when fit was almost always a first choice. Suffered from people expecting him to be a new Sutton and the fact that our wingers didn't play to his strengths as a late arriving penalty box striker, by getting to the byline and cutting crosss back.

I liked you big man, as a player and a person, and you'll be very welcome when you come back to do the half time draw or summat.

Best of luck with the rest of your career :)

shortly after he scored against man u jvh missed an absolute sitter which would have put us 2 up, thats when i had my first doubts about his lack of quality or bottle, !
delighted to see him going personally, far too injury prone and limitations in every department of his game, any celtic striker should have a has been like weir on toast,

Overall he was worth the money. Injuries made sure he was no more than a "good" Celtic player, and that there's still oddly a slight feeling of "we hardly knew ye".

Best of luck Mr. Vennegoor of Hesselink. Welcome back any time. The spirit was most willing, but the flesh was most weak.
Never worth the money, too many injuries, when he did play looked scared against crap CH's, should've been wearing a fecking mask, the amount in wages, that he robbed the club of.

Its not great is it, 4 years at the club as a striker and all we are talking about are 2 or 3 of his goals.

An absolute myth?

He was one of our best players in that game for us. Most people in the MOTM thread had him in their top three.
He hardly went 5 feet near the ball after his goal ffs  Most of the team were pish that night, hence why the goalscorers tend to get a vote in the top 3 MOM.

Other than a meagre sprinkling of important goals, he's been a crashing disappointment to be honest, given the money we paid for him (quite a lot in the context of our recent signings) and that when we signed him he was a current Dutch internationalist in the peak years of his career.

Seems like a nice guy though, with his heart in the right place. The winner against the Hun and at Tannadice last year will secure him a grateful footnote in the annals of Celtic.

All the best to him wherever he ends up.

Don't get me wrong, I think it was time for Jan to move on.
I just thought it was a bit crap that it is anounced the manager doesn't want him and admits he hasn't even spoken to him.
What would Mowbray say to him exactly? Hi Jan, hows it going, you don't know me but I'm the new Celtic Manager, I know you haven't been in contact with anyone at the club for over a month now and that you're actively seeking a new club - just thought I'd phone and let you know I don't want you

There's absolutely no reason for Mowbray to speak to him unless Jans agent calls asking for a new contract.
Remember that if your contract is ever up in your work and you suddenly see your job advertised elsewhere then. ;)

I just think it would have been the decent thing to do, and it certainly wouldn't have gone along the lines of what you said.
And why did he have the 'big sit down' with Beardy who was in the same scenario ?
Bad form IMO.

Grateful though I am for those contributions they are a poor return for a Celtic striker. It is a shame that injury played it parts but for me JVOH was symptomatic of all that was not right at Celtic, particularly since January. He simply was not worth what we paid for him in transfer fee and wages.

Maybe there's a good reason why he didn't talk to him?

I'd suggest that the decision about not keeping him was made a long time ago.

Hartley would have been a debatable one.

Found it strange he never spoke to him but I guess Mowbray knew enough about us before hand to know that he didnt want to keep JVOH. Good luck big man wherever you go.

I think he can be classed alongside Jarosik and Gravesen as a big money signing which flopped. Out of the three he was the most successful, scoring some important goals. But overall he wasn't worth the money due to too many injuries. Hope he does well wherever he goes.

0943 BST: PSV Eindhoven are set to discuss the possibility of signing Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink after the former Holland striker was release by Celtic this week. (Dutch newspaper Spits)

Good luck to him.

He had a cracking debut against Hibs at CP. We couldn't get past Jones and ?Martis that day and Jan came on and gave them a torrid time for 15 minutes. I think he scored, or if not assisted the goal. I thought we'd won a watch and signed another big powerful striker who would rough defenders up like Sutton. Jan had some great moments but his time with us was really blighted with injury.

All the best big fella.
