Ex-Rangers worker wins £22k for racial and religious discrimination
Jun 3 2008 By Charlie Gall

A FORMER call centre worker at Ibrox stadium has been awarded £22,000 after winning a race and religious discrimination claim.

James Lipka, 58, worked for Rangers projects and the Student Loans Company from Response Handling's calls base.

Mr Lipka, a Muslim, claimed that while he was working on student loans, he was called a "f*****g Mongol" and "Osama Bin Lipka".

He transferred to another client at the Edmiston House call centre but couldn't handle longer shifts.

Mr Lipka lodged a complaint of racial harassment.

He claimed he was then subjected to abusive comments during work breaks.

Mr Lipka told an employment tribunal that workers handling calls for Rangers would ridicule Northern Irish fans ringing in for tickets.

He said one worker switched on the mute button on the phone and mimicked a caller's Ulster accent.

And regular comments were made suggesting Irish callers were stupid.

Mr Lipka also claimed call handlers regularly made racist remarks about people calling for student loans.

They suggested African callers were crooks.

And comments were made about "Paki b******s".

Mr Lipka left Response - owned by Rangers chairman Sir David Murray - in August 2006 and later claimed constructive dismissal.

Response denied any racist or religious harassment.

But in a written judgment, Glasgow tribunal chairman Stewart Watt ruled the firm had violated Mr Lipka's dignity and created "an intimidating hostile, degrading, humiliating or offensive environment".

They rejected Mr Lipka's constructive dismissal claim on the grounds the real reason he left was the shift pattern.

Mr Lipka, of Glasgow, was awarded £15,000 for injury to his feelings, £3750 more for the firm's failure to follow the statutory grievance procedure and £3718 interest.

He said later: "I was treated appallingly and the public should know what goes on at these call centres."

A Response spokesman said: "We will not tolerate any form of harassment or discrimination. This was an isolated, one-off incident

I remember that being reported but Stevie_Bhoy85 said that Response currently have a law suit on their hands for sectarian discrimination. Haven't seen anything in the Press about that. :ponder:
