"Celtic defender Gary Caldwell has revealed he is ready to pledge his long-term future to the club by signing a new deal.

Bhoys chief executive Peter Lawwell has opened talks with Caldwell's agent over a contract extension to keep him at Parkhead until 2014.

Caldwell has established himself as a key member of Gordon Strachan's side since his arrival from Hibernian in the summer of 2006.

The 26-year-old insists he is happy to stay at Celtic and help the side to further glory.

"It's always been my aim to stay at Celtic," Caldwell told the Daily Record.

"I've said that to the manager, to Peter and my agent has said that. It is up to them to sort that out.

"There are a lot of players on long-term contracts and the club can grow together and be more successful.

"When you are at Celtic, you want to be remembered. You want to win league titles, cups and go far in Europe.

"To do that, you have to work hard and be successful every year. We all have the desire to keep winning.

"Now the club are trying to sign the players on longer-term deals to create that long-term goal.

"We could play together for a long time, improve together and who knows where we could be."

Good news imo. Heid Heid Heid Heid!

I was sure Caldwell had signed a new contract already this season :ponder:
In any case, good news, he deserves it and delighted to have him :)

Deserves a new deal, surprised it has been left this late to be honest.

We have the basis of a good squad for a few years to come, i think its forgotten just how young our squad is bar a few exceptions.

Boruc 28
Hinkel 26
Caddis 20
Loovens 25
Wilson 24
McManus 26
Caldwell 26
Brown 23
Crosas 20
Maloney 25
McGeady 22
McDonald 25
Samaras 23
Sheridan 19

+ the likes of O'Dea, Mizuno, Hutchinson etc

Caldwell deserves what seems to be coming his way. His form has been outstanding from March onwards - easily our most consistent player and improving all the time.

Only if it includes a clause about never being allowed to play in midfield again ;)

He is the only one of our centre halfs who can carry the ball out of defense, never hides, and played the passes against Rangers that won us the league.

One of the last players I would sell.

But then, I believe in the manager on the whole, and he likes him.

The club had an option of a year, which was taken.
If it hadnt he'd have been out of contract in June, as it stands he's contracted to June '10.

Gary Caldwell - the perfect example of how far hard work and giving 100% every game can take you.
And I mean that as a compliment!

No whoosh. I don't rate him. He has gone from terrible to average. Has some very good games but is still prone to real howlers (which he has got away with in the main this season) and is easily bullied as he is very poor in the air.

He has improved but............

I think Caldwell definitely has a doom sign hanging over him. His mistakes are horrific. However, I think he's turned around a terrible start to his career here, and would be one of my first names on the team sheet. Admittedly I'd love if we had better quality in both the CB positions, but there's no chance we'd get a better player that Caldwell for the money we'd make for selling him.

According to Strachan, Caldwell and McManus are a £20m partnership. I'm pretty sure we could get a better CB than Caldwell for £10m ;)

 I missed that particular quote. I think even you and I would agree that we wouldn't get more than a few million for him, and if Loovens is anything to go by, that won't get you much...

 Nope, think he's been one of the most consistent performers this season. Done well, is giving his all and showing vast improvement with every passing week.

Well deserved. Hes a far better player than he was at Hibs - a player Strachan has actually managed to improve.
