How do you pronounce his last name? Is it as it is written or Gillane (like Culzean Castle is Cullane)?
Just as it looks Gil...zean.

One from my youth and more remember him for being in the Harry Hood song, Spurs and Scotland. Jimmy Greaves said he was the best he ever played alongside.

Rest in peace.

I always admired Alan Gilzean, both as a tremendous player and as an apparently modest and pleasant gentleman.

May his soul rest in peace.

Superb player. I recall a Celtic-St Mirren game being postponed at the last minute and a load of guys heading for Ipox to see Dundee playing the huns. I didn't go but regretted it as Dundee hammered them 1-5 with Gilzean and a guy called Alan Cousins tearing the bastards apart.

I saw him at White Hart Lane in 1968 playing against ManUre in a 2-2 classic one Wednesday night -- great game and some incredible players on view.

RIP Alan -- you were great when Scotland still produced great players.

I remember going to a match at Celtic Park poss in 63 after they had won the league. Gilzean, Bert Slater, Alex Hamilton, Ian Ure, a very accomplished Dundee side. Massive crowd, we beat them 3-0, but it was one of those flash in the pan Celtic performances.

Alan Cousin was one of the rectors at my school in the 80s. Don't think in all the time I was there anyone knew that he too had a decent career in the game, I certainly didn't. He died a couple of years back. Shame, he was a very decent sort.

Thanks for the video.

I remember being very happy to get his card, with interesting facts on the back, possibly free with a pack of chewing gum.
This would have been about 1970

22 caps for Scotland over 9 years. Obviously there was a lot of competition in those days - e.g. Denis Law - but seems paltry.

Apparently Gilzean wasn't fond of football. Always fascinated when a pro is like that, Assou-Ekoto being the famous recent example.
