Just seen that Alan Gilzean has died at the age of 79. Played before my time, but my dad said he was some player. Helped Dundee to a league title and reached the semi final of the EC in the following season.

RIP

I remember him scoring the winner v. England at Hampden in 1964 to give Scotland three victories in a row over them after the 9-3 doing in 1961. IIRC, he was brought into the squad for 1970 WC qualifiers and scored against Germany in 3-2 defeat (Big Tam sent off for booting Haller up the arse  ).

RIP

Superb player. I recall a Celtic-St Mirren game being postponed at the last minute and a load of guys heading for Ipox to see Dundee playing the huns. I didn't go but regretted it as Dundee hammered them 1-5 with Gilzean and a guy called Alan Cousins tearing the bastards apart.

I saw him at White Hart Lane in 1968 playing against ManUre in a 2-2 classic one Wednesday night -- great game and some incredible players on view.

RIP Alan -- you were great when Scotland still produced great players.

That game is on Youtube and is well worth a watch. Dundee totally pumped the huns and Gilzean was superb. A top, top player. Had that Denis Law ability to hang in the air and score with great headers. RIP.

RIP - as everyone has said, a great player.

I recall him in an interview mentioning casually that he didn't actually like football and never watched it.

RIP Alan Gilzean, another legend from the golden days passes on. Hunter Davies’s book “The Glory Game” features some great anecdotes about Gilzean, and the Spurs team in 1971-72 when the author spent that season following Spurs behind the scenes. He was terrific for Dundee in the early sixties, it was a privilege to see him in action.

How do you pronounce his last name? Is it as it is written or Gillane (like Culzean Castle is Cullane)?
