Scott Brown is facing a major Champions League fitness fight ahead of Celtic’s crucial qualifier in Armenia tomorrow night.
Brendan Rodgers’ inspirational captain jetted out with the squad for the first leg against Alashkert but is a serious doubt after sustaining a knee injury in Saturday’s 7-0 romp over Shamrock Rovers.
Injured Leigh Griffiths and Marvin Compper stayed behind in Scotland but such is Brown’s influence that the Hoops manager will give him every chance to make it.
But if his medical team tells him the 33-year-old could make the injury worse by playing – and with Celtic facing eight matches just to reach the group stages of the Champions League – he’ll be forced to sit out the first leg.
That would be a major blow but Callum McGregor believes Celtic can get through the gruelling qualifying campaign for the third straight year.
He said: “The boys have accepted the challenge. We need to get our heads down, get our fitness up and do as best as we can.”
McGregor admits Celtic know they will have to hang tough at times after surviving major scares against Beer Sheva and Astana in the last two seasons.
But on both occasions the Hoops managed to claim their place with the big boys and McGregor is convinced standing firm amid the strain can set them up for another crack this time around.
He said: “It’s important, getting more experience at that level and knowing how to see games out.
“That process you go through, its tough. You do have to hang on at times. It’s a hard part of the season when boys are still trying to find sharpness and fitness.
“If we get the team together, get the right shape and we work off each other, we’ve got a good chance.”
Rodgers admits Celtic have never had it so hard in qualifying – but has no doubts his men can come good again.
The boss said: “It’s clearly going to be more difficult this year. We know what we have to do. It’s the best club tournament in the world, so we want to be in it.”

CALLUM McGREGOR says Moussa Dembele and Odsonne Edouard’s strike partnership will scare the living daylights out of Alashkert.
The pacy French pair hit three between them in the Hoops‘ 7-0 thrashing of Shamrock Rovers in Dublin on Saturday.
Boss Brendan Rodgers is tempted to start them in the first leg of their Champions League qualifier in Armenia.
McGregor said: “They’ve got pace, power and they’re a hard two for anyone trying to defend against them.
“We know if we get the ball up to that pair as quickly as possible they will do their thing.
“With those two there at the top of the pitch, you’ve always got a chance of scoring.
“That is something we’re trying to work on again this season — scoring more goals.
“When you see those two up front it puts the fear into teams because they have everything.”
Odsonne hit a double against Rovers while Dembele weighed in with one himself. There were also goals for subs Scott Sinclair and Lewis Morgan.
McGregor believes the space the pair create by pulling defenders out of position makes it easier for him to find pockets to run into.
He said: “Playing in midfield behind them you have so many options. You can spin one in behind them, play it to feet and go again.
“It’s a great platform for the midfield boys to play off.
“You can run beyond them as well because you know they’re going to hold it up and give you something to work with.
“It’s great to have that kind of firepower up front.”
Celtic jetted back into Glasgow on Saturday night before beginning their 2,500 mile journey to Armenia.

THERE was a time when Celtic approached journeys into unchartered territory with apprehension.
Armenia becomes the latest stop-off for the Hoops in their pursuit of Champions League football.
In the past distant treks deep into Europe to face sides like Alashkert have literally been trips into the unknown.
But not anymore. Not according to Callum McGregor, anyway.
Brendan Rodgers’ side began their 2,500-mile journey to Armenia ahead of the pivotal first leg first qualifying round clash.
But McGregor insists experiences playing in the likes of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Gibraltar stand them in good stead.
Midfielder McGregor said: “When you go to these places, it can be tough. It’s hot, the conditions are difficult, the pitch can be a bit different.
“Getting more experience at that level is important in terms of trying to win games and knowing how to see them out.
“That process you go through is tough. You do have to hang on at times.
“It’s a hard part of the season when boys are still trying to find sharpness and fitness.
“It’s massively important to be mentally sharp too. It defines your season, how you perform in these games. Even this early on.
“If we can get the team together, get the right shape and we work off each other then we’ve got a good chance.”
McGregor, 25, also believes steady and selective recruitment has helped the squad evolve and improve leading to a greater strength in depth and increased confidence.
The small matter of knowing they’ve made history as double Treble winners doesn’t do any harm either.
He said: “When I look at the boys we have, we look a lot more stable unit now. Hopefully we’ll be all right when we get into the process.
“The squad is strong. It’s a team game and, in modern football, there are 60 games a season. You need a strong bench, need a large group.
“We need the boys not in the starting 11 to be still at it and pushing the boys in the team.
“We know how good our squad is and we know how beneficial it is to have that strength in depth.
“You’ve seen it over the last few seasons, how we’ve needed everybody. It will be exactly the same again this year.”
Saturday’s 7-0 hammering of Shamrock Rovers showed signs of what McGregor was referring too.
Boss Brendan Rodgers was able to make ten changes in the second half after already subbing skipper Scott Brown at the break.
Scott Sinclair and Lewis Morgan added to the scoreline before the team headed back to Glasgow ahead of their airport return.
Rodgers has made no secret he wants more goals from his team this season.
The Hoops must navigate their way through three qualifying rounds and a play-off match if they’re to make a return to Europe’s top table again.
An extra round is the challenge in front of them this season as Uefa’s new rules, agreed in 2016, come into play.
From now on the top four teams from England, Germany, Spain and Italy automatically qualify for the group stages.
It leaves just six spots — down from ten — available through the qualifying rounds.
McGregor said: “Is having to get through four rounds unfair? That’s just what it is.
“You can moan about it, say it’s not fair, whatever, but that’s what you have to do if you’re going to get to the group stages.
“It’s obviously one more than last season but the boys have accepted the challenge.
“We just need to do it. We need to get our heads down, get our fitness up and do the best we can.
“Saturday was a good workout, getting game time, getting the goals and getting our confidence up. The hope is that we carry that into Tuesday.”
After the weekend win Rodgers claimed McGregor is still one of the most under-rated players he’s ever known.
It’s a true statement, despite McGregor now being a full Scotland international and a regular scorer of important goals for the Hoops.
But, when asked about the comment, McGregor just shrugged his shoulders, smiled and in typical fashion added: “When I came back in for pre-season all I wanted to do was to keep going.
“I wanted to keep working hard, producing more of the same and see where that takes me. I’m delighted to be in the team, doing well and getting goals.
“I had about four weeks off through the summer which was alright, to be fair.
“But once you go back in you feel as if you’ve not had a break! The games are coming thick and fast.”

I hope we don’t play Brown if there’s a doubt about his fitness. We need him fit for the next round and the start of the league season.
