They also say the same thing about Napoli out of sheer ignorance & because Napoli aren't Juve, Milan or Inter.

What have Napoli, Sampdoria & Verona all got in common, they all won serie a in the same 7 years Maradona played in Italy.
I never mentioned Napoli.
Stand by what I said re 86 World Cup.
No Maradona, Argentina and their " cracking players" ain't winning it.
Lee McCulloch would have scored for fun playing with wee Diego
Maradona definitely elevated Argentina to a level that they wouldn't have gotten near without him, but that's not as catchy a phrase as "won it single handedly" which is a phrase that causes pedants like me a problem

Was at the game at Hampden. I went to see Maradona. I left thinking 'what the hell was that'

He 'danced' with the ball is the best way I can describe him. So far ahead of everyone on the park, they couldn't get close to him.

Thank God I went. By some distance, the best player I've seen live.

There is a clip of him literally dancing with the ball in a pre game warm up.

The reaction to him from our friends down South has been hilarious.

I love the fact that they're still so bitter towards him over events in 86.

Lineker calling him a "laughing stock"....I very much doubt the Argentinians see him as a laughing stock.

I actually like Lineker but his (and every other Englishman’s) bitterness towards Maradona is hilarious

To be fair to England, if they win it, and they've got as good a chance as any, then Harry Kane would have to be spoken about in the same breath.

England don't really beat big teams in major competitions.

In about 50 years, they've beaten Germany twice, Argentina once, France once. They've played Brazil twice in World Cups and lost both games.

To win it, they'll probably need to win at least half as many games against top quality opposition than they've managed in all the years since they won the World Cup. That's if they're lucky.

Teams not in it this time, they beat Italy once as well and got a famous draw.

The teams they've played so far (and looked convincing in one of the matches at least) aren't top end sides with World Cup pedigree.

Not discounting them, because a few of the major countries look distinctly average here.

No he wouldn't

Kane might well end up top scorer and winning the cup but f**k me, he would have a hell of a long way to go to be remembered as the greatest of all time.

I'm sure there are plenty of W.C winners who scored a shed load but aren't ever in the GOAT debate.

In respect of Neds above post Maradona in 86 to 90 W.C beat EVERY previous WC winning team.

Say what you want about Kane, and plenty will, but he's a consumable professional. I doubt very much that you'll see him at an England World Cup game in thirty years time, coked out of his noggin' on ecstasy bongs.

Of course the West Germany team had great players. Hence why it took more than one great player to beat them.
My argument would be that it took a great and courageous performance to beat them, admittedly in a climate Germans play in rarely.

We've beaten many of Europe's biggest and most important clubs on our day, world class players in most positions, I don't think anyone was under the illusion it made McManus, Caldwell and Co. great players when we beat Milan.

Oscar Ruggeri was a top player but overall Argentina were stronger in 78,82 and 90 than 1986. Perhaps an omen for this year if Leo can get Messi, the squads he was part of in his younger days had considerably more talent than the current incumbents
When we beat Man United Nakamura is obviously remembered for the free kick but he did next to nothing all night in a creative sense.

A combination of things won us that game, Naka goal, Boruc penalty saves & guys like Balde McManus Telfer & everyone else worked their arse off all night to restrict United to one shot on goal. Our organisation that night was ridiculously good.

Nakamura wonder strike is meaningless if the rest of the team don't perform above their normal level, an extreme example I know and nowhere near as comparable as winning a world cup.

If I were to see Kane out of his head on a potentially lethal cocktail of drink and drugs, mouthing obscenities at the Nigerian ambassador, giving the finger to all and sundry, I would not like that. Not one bit.
