He didn't. People talk as if he had 10 Lee McCullochs as team mates - there were some cracking players in that Argentina team even without counting Maradona. Not in his league obviously, but nobody was. To say Maradona won it single handedly does a disservice to Valdano, Ruggeri etc.
They also say the same thing about Napoli out of sheer ignorance & because Napoli aren't Juve, Milan or Inter.

What have Napoli, Sampdoria & Verona all got in common, they all won serie a in the same 7 years Maradona played in Italy.
I never mentioned Napoli.
Stand by what I said re 86 World Cup.
No Maradona, Argentina and their " cracking players" ain't winning it.
Lee McCulloch would have scored for fun playing with wee Diego

Exactly same ones I could name. Brown cause his name and he scored and Bastia cause he had a beard!
Couldn't tell you any of the others.
Yep

Did Jose Luis Brown not have a Scottish granny or something like that? Diego called him Broony but Bilardo called him Browny.
Jose Luis Brown was a descendant of James Brown who emigrated to Argentina on the Symmetry. The first great Argentina team of the 1900s had a pile of Brown's descendants in the one team. All part of the history of Scotland inventing Argentine, Uruguayan and Brazilian football.

Don't think many Napoli fans would think they'd have done the same without Maradona. They didn't seem to think so at the time.

I'm sure Argentina did have some very good players in 86. So did other teams. None of them had Maradona.

I wonder if he's trying to draw all attention on him, in order to take it away from the Argentina players? They seem to be under more scrutiny than any other nation. Probably just wishful thinking.

Valdano was probably their next most notable player, I think for those constantly bringing him up it's worth noting he played less than thirty times for Argentina, four of his seven goals came in Mexico. He's trotted out fairly regularly alongside Burrachaga and the formidable Ruggeri. They were very good players but let's not compare Argentina man for man with those great West Germans, Rudi Voeller parked on the bench, Jurgen Klinsmann unable to make the squad. The French and Brazilians with equally decent squads littered with world class talent.

No-one is comparing them man for man. But if they were that great they should have been able to deal with Maradona and 10 bussed-in tango dancers.

Point is, every team has players with varying degrees of ability. Argentina was clearly an extreme example of that, but Maradona didn’t win it on his own.

You are right, clearly an extreme example. The most extreme example we've seen.

I don't feel the need to justify those Germans being great players, look at their names, look at what they won.

Of course the West Germany team had great players. Hence why it took more than one great player to beat them.

My argument would be that it took a great and courageous performance to beat them, admittedly in a climate Germans play in rarely.

We've beaten many of Europe's biggest and most important clubs on our day, world class players in most positions, I don't think anyone was under the illusion it made McManus, Caldwell and Co. great players when we beat Milan.

Oscar Ruggeri was a top player but overall Argentina were stronger in 78,82 and 90 than 1986. Perhaps an omen for this year if Leo can get Messi, the squads he was part of in his younger days had considerably more talent than the current incumbents

Obviously it's not a literal interpretation of he won it on it's own. I'm sure Germany would have held on for a draw if it was just him v 11.

Sometimes players' importance to a team are more than the simple fact that they're just one of the team doing their bit. Beckham dragged England by the scruff of the neck into the finals (just as he was left to shoulder 100% of the blame for their knockout after being sent off, fairly or unfairly), Larsson was our talisman and, even if it wasn't scoring, the fact he was on the pitch meant anything was possible. And the other team knew it.

Argentina had a good team, no doubt. There's a reason Maradona is revered in that country and in Naples, regardless of the revisionism. What happened for them almost certainly wouldn't have happened without him, regardless of their other good players or the changing landscape of Italian football.

The city of Naples somehow seems hugely appropriate for Maradona to have played in and had success.
