A total football icon, and will always rank ahead of Messi just for the romance he brought to the game.
That's the unfortunate thing for Messi. Messi could win everything for Argentina five times over but he won't ever be the romanticised figure Maradona is due to the fact he left Argentina very early and the political climate in Argentina when Maradona rose to greatness.

Maybe, but he never won them a world cup single handedly (ignoring obvious pun).
Neither did Maradona.
He did.
That Argentina team would never have won that tournament without him, his goals and his assists.

Their size and style also draw comparisons, but regardless of talent Diego was the first Argentinian genius football midget.

There’s a cracking podcast My Webpage about his time in Naples and the upcoming documentary.

Edit: link isn’t working, dunno how to post a link to an Apple podcast 😟

Just a few clips from his early days in the youth World Cup and against Scotland and Hampden and England at Wembley.

Watching these clips show why to me and many others, he'll never be surpassed.

https://youtu.be/GxFuYut827g (Scotland)

https://youtu.be/Vyh3NuRD1xA (England)

https://youtu.be/LGIbOxbGhQU (Yugoslavia)

https://youtu.be/bPZG6GCrfvA (Italy)

Here's some from the bloke who's never done it for Argentina :ph43r:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dzu2sTk9WBw (Lionel Messi The 21 WONDER Goals with Argentina)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=axvyehnvRqo (20 Impossible Plays Lionel Messi Did with Argentina The One Man Army)

Maybe, but he never won them a world cup single handedly (ignoring obvious pun).

Argentina the other night looked like how I'd expect Scotland to play with Messi in the side. Never mind Maradona, if Ronaldo was playing for Argentina, they wouldn't be hanging on by their fingertips right now.

Obviously an amazing player though and one of the best the world has ever seen.

Despite how history has been rewritten neither did Maradona

He didn't. People talk as if he had 10 Lee McCullochs as team mates - there were some cracking players in that Argentina team even without counting Maradona. Not in his league obviously, but nobody was. To say Maradona won it single handedly does a disservice to Valdano, Ruggeri etc.

They also say the same thing about Napoli out of sheer ignorance & because Napoli aren't Juve, Milan or Inter.

What have Napoli, Sampdoria & Verona all got in common, they all won serie a in the same 7 years Maradona played in Italy.

It's clearly impossible to single handedly win a World Cup, but Maradona in 86 is the closest you are ever likely to see. He was pivotal to the attacking of that team and contributed considerably more than anybody else, regardless of how good other individuals were.

Agree. It's also not just what the man actually does with the ball,it's the feeling he creates throughout the team.
