Is Maradona the only drug cheat in the history of sport to have this major flaw overlooked?

Can’t think of any others who are still considered the greatest

He wasn’t gay was he?
Don't think the drugs made him better.
Just imagine how good he would have been without them.
Don't bring in the flatterers for hauners!

They did in the 94 WC.

I think he’s the greatest player of all time but his cheating is totally overlooked. Can’t think of any other drug cheat who retained their status as Maradona has.

He was on the down slope by 94.
His glory days were 84-90, they were free of performance enhancing drugs ( maybe not recreational ones).
Maybe that's why he retains the status.

Exactly same ones I could name. Brown cause his name and he scored and Bastia cause he had a beard!
Couldn't tell you any of the others.
Yep

Did Jose Luis Brown not have a Scottish granny or something like that? Diego called him Broony but Bilardo called him Browny.
Luis Brown had an Irish grandfather I think.

Look at the video against England 2 mins 01 secs in - its like an early tester for the second goal he scored against them in '86 lol - except his effort in the 1980 game just went past the post.
He practically does the exact same thing to the Scottish midfield before releasing a pass for the goal.

Watch the others for moments of surreal genius.

His control.
Composure.
Walking the ball to the opposition before bursting away or releasing some outrageous pass.
18 years old and he was doing things footballers had rarely seen or thought of.

Still can't imagine anyone close to him.
Messi, Ronaldo and Neymar combined might just make half a Maradona. :worthy:

The closest thing to a one-man team you will ever get.

Messi has heart of a pea compared to Diego.

He could lift a whole team to greatness by sheer force of his personality.

The old-school fouls (assaults) he endured in his career would have broken Messi into little bits.

The horrific assault by the Butcher of Bilbao was worthy of a jail sentence.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f9_f9UrizSk

But what I love about Maradona is that after he recovered from his leg break he exacted his revenge against Bilbao.

A true leader of men into battle.

Could you imagine Messi standing up after having his leg broken and showing that his team would not be cowed by Hun-type hatchet men?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vttuYis46A0

The best player on the planet with a heart of a lion and a will of steel.

The treatment he received in Italian football in the 1980s was brutal.

I can't remember the stats correctly but the number of times he was fouled in every game he played there was ridiculous.

He was constantly booted black and blue in an era where you had to really work hard to get a red card but still managed to lead his team to two titles.

Towards the later stages in Italy he needed an op every summer to 'scrape' his knees to try to repair the continual damage.

If Maradona was playing now, with the protection given to players by the new rules, he would be dragging Argentina to glory by the scruff of the neck and meek Messi would be getting swept along in a true footballing God's wake.

Anyone who wishes to join in the worship of the greatest player ever can sign up at https://iglesiamaradoniana.wordpress.com

NB: There is no Church of Messi as he is a false prophet sent to detract you from the gifts of the one true footballing God.

If Maradona was playing now opponents wouldn’t need to kick him cos he’d be blowing out his arse after 15 minutes...

Of course Maradona and Messi are both such amazing players that they’d adjust to whatever was/is required of them in any era.

I was given some books & his autobiography was in that pile. Reading it, some of his decision making and advice given - especially around transfers - was seriously mental. Quite often random  Think that's how he ended up at Napoli. Though how they loved him. Think he's my favourite footballer - in his prime in his teens & early twenties he was peerless.

Just a few clips from his early days in the youth World Cup and against Scotland and Hampden and England at Wembley.

Watching these clips show why to me and many others, he'll never be surpassed.

https://youtu.be/Vyh3NuRD1xA (England)

https://youtu.be/LGIbOxbGhQU (Yugoslavia)

Here's some from the bloke who's never done it for Argentina :ph43r:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mRWTS7FheAg (Lionel Messi Best Dribbling Skills Ever Argentina)
Maybe, but he never won them a world cup single handedly (ignoring obvious pun).

Argentina the other night looked like how I'd expect Scotland to play with Messi in the side. Never mind Maradona, if Ronaldo was playing for Argentina, they wouldn't be hanging on by their fingertips right now.

Obviously an amazing player though and one of the best the world has ever seen.

Ronaldo ain't even the best Ronaldo never mind as good as Messi

Aye, I'll maybe have to revise that after yesterday's game.

From what I've seen, I think he's a better player than Ronaldo*, but comparing the Argentina v Croatia game against the Spain v Portugal game, it looked like Ronaldo at this tournament could drag his team to a better performance than Messi.

*People watch more Spanish football than me, so I'm not going to go into a big argument over that either way.

Should show spoiled weans on their 3G's and pampered players him trying to get fit for the 1994 WC.

The thing that's noticeable in those clips is that his teammates are looking at him as a captain and leader figure even when he was just 18. No one is treating him like a kid or trying to protect him, he's already their leader and talisman.

If you look at Messi and Ronaldo - as everyone seems to be comparing those two in this thread - they weren't seen as captains/leaders until much later. In fact, they weren't even the best players in their respective teams until they were in their early to mid twenties. I think this is one of the main attributes that sets El Diego apart. It's like he was already a complete footballer from day one, there was no need to mature or be guided, he just knew how to do it all.

Pele had a similar thing too - captain and leader by the age of 17 - but wasn't as single handedly influential as Maradona IMO.

Hopefully last night has put that myth to bed for good with Portugal hanging on by their fingertips v Iran. They'd have been papped out if the Iran player didn't bottle his chance in injury time.

Glad to be old enough to have even seen still playing, even just on the tele.

A total football icon, and will always rank ahead of Messi just for the romance he brought to the game.
