Since it's the close season and our transfer dealings have not taken off yet I thought a discussion about our keepers of recent years might be ok. So, in the last twenty years or so who has impressed?

I would say Boruc,Forster & Gordon are the pick. Boruc at his best was head and shoulders above the others imo. Some of the back-ups were awful though.

Would probably agree with all of the above. I think Gordon gets a raw deal at times due to his distribution abilities, but we're very lucky to have had a string of consistently good first choice keepers for well over a decade now.

The back ups really have been something else mind you :boik:

Boruc was the last world class player to play in Scotland.

Forster was almost as good at his peak.

It's interesting that the pair of them had a really hot streak for most of their time with us, but went off the boil badly later. Boruc's last season with us was poor and what's currently going on with Forster is quite sad, the guy who we had should be England's number one in Russia.

Zaluska was bang average, Mark Brown was dreadful, Gordon is decent, but not outstanding. I'm actually rather optimistic about Bain and I reckon he was a great piece of business.

The keepers of the MON era were a rather mixed bag...

When you look at clean sheets percentage wise Forster 52% and Boruc only 39% whuich surprised me a bit. Can't find figures for Gordon.

Forster at his best was better than Boruc. At his worst, he was miles better than Boruc at his fattest worst.

The 'pick'? Haha! I'd say they are the only options when discussing good Celtic keepers. Every other Celtic goalkeeper in my lifetime has been brutal. And I include Bonner in that.

Boruc from 2005 to 2008 was the best Celtic keeper I've seen, Forster was excellent to & Gordon miles behind but in 3rd place.

David Marshall was every bit as bad as Douglas & Hedman and lived off a couple of good days in March 2004.

Sold the goal in the cup final v Dunfermline, culpable for the goal that ended an invincible season in 2004, at fault for Dunfermlines winner at Celtic Park on trophy day, Arveladzes winner at Ibrox that ended the curse we had on them, Aberdeens goal in a defeat at home in early 04/05.

Bloody impressive considering he did all of this in less than 6 months yet people used to say he was a good keeper

Aye - I never really rated David Marshall. He's made a decent career for himself for a pretty bang average keeper who'll be remember for a couple of fairytale matches in March 2004. I remember watching Boruc make his debut for us in a pre-season friendly away to Leicester and within the first 10 minutes he'd pulled off 2 wonder saves and saved a penalty. You could just tell from his demeanor and style that he was a quality keeper. Of course the wisdom of all things Jim Craig - who was working on Celtic TV at the time - went to great lengths to explain to us all how great it was that "the young Scottish laddie" was our number one and how he couldn't wait to see Marshall restored to first-choice keeper for the competitive games. And he was. Conceding 5 in Bratislava then 4 at Fir Park a few days later before Strachan quickly dropped him and put Boruc in.

It's a tough call between Boruc and Forster.

At their best, I think Boruc shades it, but I do think Forster may have been more consistent. From all indications, Forster was a great pro who was constantly trying to improve himself. I'm not sure the same can be said for Boruc.

I think temperament comes into question too. Do you prefer the feisty, wears his heart on his sleeve keeper, or the calm and collected type?

There was a period where it felt every time someone shot at our goal with Marshall that it would go in despite it not being a blatant howler by him.

He instilled more fear in our back 4 than Douglas & Hedman did which takes some doing.

I can't even remember why Hedman was brought out of the side in 2004/05, does anyone remember? He was from memory doing ok at the time.

In over 50 years of watching Celtic, the best three keepers we’ve had have been the last three.

At their very best, Forster> Boruc>>>Gordon

Aye, one of those keepers that was never directly to blame but still conceded loads of goals.

Perfect for EPL relegation fodder and Scotland who get scudded anyway, dreadful for us because it’s a bit more noticeable when we get humped.
