I got my first season ticket in '95 under Burns. Some of the best attacking football I have saw under Celtic was with Burns. Cadette, DiCanio, PVH, Thom, Collins, McStay. The problem was that we were far to naive and cavalier at the back. Poor GK and central defenders. He was also too loyal to guys like Peter Grant who I thought was utter pish but talked a good game. It sounded as well with hindsight that he was too naive with transfer dealings such as the Phil O'Donnell signing (paying the full fee at once) and dealing with a hostile media and getting sucked in. We may not have won much but that Celtic team had a lot of good players that 7 year old me could look up to like Pierre, DiCanio, Cadette and McStay (most of those attacking players would get in most Celtic teams, possibly even in O'Neills team outwith Larsson). At the time you always hoped, maybe this is our year. I agree about the mentality not changing until O'Neill came. I don't even think it was the 6-2 game that changed it, as we lost 5-1 the next game. Always felt it was the 3-0 win at Ibrox where Lubo dominated that swung it. You see it now in the other side of Glasgow where sevco appear to crumble at any sign of pressure and we look confident any time we play them. Edited by Vinnie Bhoy, 18 Jun 2018, 06:10 PM.

The huns made a lot of mistakes the season we stopped the 10 and we took advantage of the breaks for once. Smith announcing he was chucking it, Gascoigne leaving (he wasn't at his peak but he was still a good player), I think Gough went to the USA for parts of the season, Laudrup had a poor season, Negri disappearing after Christmas despite scoring a ridiculous amount of goals before Christmas, the game against them being cancelled due to Diana being bumped off when we hit a poor run of form etc. It's a combination of that and us improving our team under Jansen with the likes of Rieper, Burley, Larsson, Lambert. I'm pretty sure Annoni also did a good job of man marking Laudrup but I may be wrong. Heck even Gould who I didn't rate was an improvement on Gordon Marshall. Billy McNeill was often quoted as saying that there was a fairytale about our club. Sometimes though it takes more than just fairy tales. Drawing away to dross like Kilmarnock and suchlike was the stuff of nightmares in a collection of frustrating draws, that proved to be our Big Bad Wolf. If ever there was a once upon a time that I wanted all our dreams to come true, it was for Tommy in that season, yes we were richly entertained in the attacking side of things but if you can't keep them out at the other end, you just ain't gonna cut it. |

Was Tommy Burns football really better to watch the first 3 or 4 years of MON Celtic team or even the football Dr Jo at times managed to get going? I've always thought the great football was romanticised when you look back and see the amount of 0-0 & 1-1 that ultimately did us in. |

For better context you should look at what went before than what came after. |

The Hampden year was pretty dire. His third season was tough at times and I think there was too much reliance on Di Canio and Cadete. There was some great football in the first year back at Celtic Park. Yes, there were far too many draws and three defeats to rangers (league and cups). Dr Jo eventually got us playing some very good football but there was a lot of dross that season too. MON’s team rarely got credit they deserved for some good football but the emphasis was on winning, which separates them from a lot of other Celtic sides |
