the Irn BRU Cup is the Scottish Challenge Cup, formerly known as B&Q, Ramadan’s, Petrofac etc
I liked the wider range of teams involved last season and this year 2 English teams are invited, the two highest non-promoted teams from the 5th tier
Although I didn’t see any of the games the logo showed it as available on BeIN sports in Australia, I’m curious to know how many tuned in!
At first I though the 5th tier English invite was embarrassing but it seems fair, a third of the Scottish teams are from the 4th tier so it sounds about right to give everyone a decent chance.

Did anyone go the Celtic Colts match v Annan last season?

Bit of a minter if one of them win it.

That said, I don't think the majority of the Championship teams take this seriously anymore.

I've no doubt its profile is raised a smidgen in the early rounds, but the reality still was a final between Inverness and Dumbarton at McDiarmid Park in front of 3500 people.

They're not though.

If it was stuck with the lower league teams as previously, then none of us would be talking about it. We only are because of the introduction of the new teams. I never cared for the results of this cup before, but did once the Colts were in, and I'm sure I'm not the only Celtic fan that did. That equals more interest. Add in some teams from outside the normal sphere and once again that equals more interest.

There is plenty to moan about regarding football up here, but this competition is not one of them. It might not work, but at least they are trying.

I was looking at the website and it doesn’t formally announce the addition of English teams yet
However I note that 4 highland and 4 lowland league teams are also included
https://spfl.co.uk/challenge-cup/format/

I don’t live in Scotland any more but I used to enjoy the occasional trip to locations like Cowdenbeath or Berwick
This tournament looks like it gives some fans the chance to get to some different grounds around the British isles.

Another plus is that the smaller teams get a realistic chance to win something
Look at the list of winners it includes Alloa, Stenhousemuir, origina Airdrie, new Airdrie,
Even Sevco managed two appearances in the final

Could this bankrupt, or seriously harm, wee Scottish teams? E.g. If Peterhead were drawn away to Dagenham.

Would doubt it think sponsors etc. will contribute towards the expenses

Would Sevco survived when they were in the Championship with a trip to Kettering? :ponder:

Would Kettering ever survive a visit from Sevco?

Too easy to access for Chelsea fans.

There's a travel allowance built in for any club who has to travel to Wales or Ireland and vice versa. Assume England would be the same.

 from prior years’ info:
“A club travelling to another country for an Irn-Bru Cup match will receive a travel allowance of Ł5,000”
Not sure if this goes up each year but it wouldn’t be any less

Non-Scottish teams confirmed:
following UEFA approval, Sutton United and Boreham Wood – the highest-ranked Vanarama National League sides in 2017/18 still competing in the division – will join the Irish (Bohemians and Bray Wanderers), Northern Irish (Crusaders and Coleraine) and Welsh (The New Saints and Connah’s Quay Nomads) representatives at the second-round stage of the competition.

The first-round draw for the 2018/19 IRN-BRU Cup will take place on Tuesday 26 June

Went to Annan last year.
Not too sure if Annan had signed up half the Clyde team or it was the other way round.
Annan have a good wee set up, one of the locals claimed the 500 seater stand in the three sided ground came from a lottery winner.
Crowd was something like 295 and you could probably name the Tic fans in the crowd from European away games.
Game was complete pish since we lost 3-1.
Ł12 to get in what from what seemed like a glorified youth game seemed a bit steep.
Going by the wee diddy clubs forums they openly hate the powers that be for allowing us to play in the competition.
All sorts of daft talk about boycotts which seems a bit daft when your average crowd is 300.
