Interestingly, we're trying to sign a lad who was involved in the random shooting of a pedestrian in the head from a moving vehicle. Seems like a good lad who has benefited from being given another chance.
What have I missed here?! :suspect:
Eddie shot some random fella for the craic with a. 22 when he was on loan at Toulouse.

Even if you take away his personal history

How many games has he actually played in the last few years?
That was my point yesterday. Forget his past etc., is a player whose only games in the last 3 years were for Bolton worth all of these pages of discussion??

He's 25 now, not a 21 year old kid.

Sporting seem to have lost a few players due to a "dispute" with fans and the president. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2018/06/12/sporting-lisbon-chaos-continues-players-terminate-contracts/

Might be one or two to look at in this lot.

At the risk of getting bogged down in a philosophical mire or dragging up ancient history, you can't really compare what Flanagan did to what Griffiths or even Eduoard did.

Griffiths' antics at the time were pretty vile but ultimately, nobody was physically harmed and he's gone some way to making an effort to improve himself since then. Edouard will have been no older than 18 at the time of his incident and has kept his nose clean since. McGregor is a tough one. You could argue what he did was worse than any of them. Certainly could have caused more damage. From what I understand he was miles over the limit so it's not much of a grey area. I really rate the guy as a player but if the club had sacked him over that incident I don't think any reasonable person could have objected.

I'd still maintain that physically battering your girlfriend, someone who has put their trust in you, requires a distinct lack of humanity to even contemplate. Not to mention this is a 25 year old man, certainly old enough to know better. I think if he had taken ownership of his actions and as others have suggested, contributed to charities aimed at tackling domestic abuse, you could make a case for him showing a genuine desire to make amends. Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think anything like this has happened.

That's the last I'll say on it. Everything else aside, he'd be a poor signing in a high priority area of the pitch.

He’s never admitted it. His teammate who was in the car did - then withdrew his confession

Edouard was in the car but never admitted he fired the shot and appealed his sentence. Don’t think you’d be appealing a suspended sentence if you were guilty

Interesting debate to be had on moral equivalence judging by some of the strong opinions expressed on here.

Does everyone deserve a second chance regardless of the nature or severity of their crime?

Is a single isolated act of outright assault more or less forgivable than repeated acts of arseholish/anti-social behaviour that wouldn't normally merit a jail sentence (e.g. drunk driving, offensive or racist social media posts etc)?

Is it right to consider a single punch or kick aimed at a woman as a more heinous crime than an assault that inflicts serious injury on an able bodied male? And if society does view violence against women as a crime in a category of it's own, could that be viewed as a form of sexism in itself?

Join the panel tonight for this and more on the KDS Moral Maze

Equally it could be the signs of sociopathic character traits, in an individual lacking all conscience.

Sounds more like a sense of entitlement over a lack of conscience.

As I said, his team mate previously admitted it. Edouard was supposed to be driving.

Yeah, I never accused him of doing it. I'm glad we're (hopefully) signing him, but at the time I was kind of disgusted that we were linking ourselves with a guy who had a conviction for something so heinous which could have gotten an innocent person blinded, or even killed. I think second-chances are a good thing, within reason.

"Could be" and "signs" should be enough to put this to bed. Let alone the "traits" part.

Flanagan is someone who we'd be taking quite a leap with in terms of his ability at this point. That alone has him be a no for me.
