Even if we sell Armstrong our midfield pool be Kouassi, Bitton, Brown, McGregor, N'tcham, Rogic, Christie, Benyu. 8 players for 3 positions.

I don't even get the we need to replace Armstrong stuff. If we want to supplement the pool further then we should be promoting our academy players, not paying 2.5m + a player for another benchwarmer.

The manager has shown little inclination to pick three of those eight players (four if you include Bitton who has rarely been used in midfield). I agree though, there are other areas we should be prioritising.

I imagine if McGinn is signed he will understand that this next season is a transition in to the 1st team.

Even if he plays well we have big players in the team and they won’t be allowed to sit on the bench losing value.

Brown will probably play a few less games next season, with perhaps McGinn/Kouassi getting game time in LC and smaller league games depending on how the league is going.

I think you can write off Benyu and Christie there. 5 for 3 is more accurate, and that is being generous towards Eboue and Bitton.

I'd be fine with signing McGinn. With the revolving door for players, having guys likely to be here for more than 2 or 3 seasons should be welcomed. Providing they aren't shampoo, of course.

Christie didn't show up in the big games for Aberdeen. He should be punted this summer and use any money to buy 2 decent defenders.

So we figure he must be in the £5-10m bracket ? :ponder:

What is our record outlay on a defender? Is it still Stubbs?

Everton looking to punt Schneiderlin, Klassen, Sandro, Mirallas, Williams, Garbutt, Galloway, Browning, Rooney, Bolasie, Niasse and Fines Mori.

A few of them might be worth a look. Wages though...

Aye, Rafael

Was reported as 5.5m at the time, although, not sure if that was his whole contract including wages.

Stubbs was 3.5m iirc

Both Everton and Aston Villa having fire-sales.

Should we be back in for Hourihane or too rich for us now?

Like many , not really seeing it with Mcginn. Gaffers already on record as saying some of our more proven starters like Armstrong and Mcgregor weren`t quite good enough for CL level so not sure why Mcginn is an improvement. He would help us continue to dominate Scottish football if either Armstrong or Mcgregor go, probably.

He`s unlikely to help us kick on in European terms but am not sure we can afford the type of players who are. We still needed to speculate on Edouard , Ntcham and Dembele to a degree to get a player nearer Euro levels of good and they will all be young and slightly erratic like them due to their age/experience when they come.
He said McGregor isn't good enough for the CL? When was this?

I thought he was one of our better performers in the competition this year.
Aye I have no memory of him saying this about either McGregor or Armstrong, or anyone for that matter. And if he did say it about McGregor he's dead wrong. Was arguably our best performer in Europe this season.
Maybe being harsh on Mcgregor but he said after both Bayern and Anderlecht defeats we had players that simply weren`t good enough at that level and Armstrong was subbed in both including at half time in the Anderlecht game. Maybe assumptions on my part.

Callums had a great season and improved on some aspects of his play, he scores sometimes great and sometimes important goals buts still found wanting in others.

Mcginn wouldn`t be a massive downgrade on either domestically IMO, but would offer nothing going forward in Europe and Mcgregor has had good form in the qualifiers most seasons.

The midfield still struggles at group stage level both in terms of creating and supporting the defence.Only 2 players anywhere near it were Brown and Ntcham to a lesser degree.

if Villa have a fire sale Chesters the one to ask about. Even at 10m he would be a steal. Top top player.

Have you watched Villa much? He might be worth £10m but not in Celtic pounds. For that we need at least two players, if not three and of a better quality than Chester.

Most of the guys on that list are in similar stages of their careers to that of Boyata and Sinclair before they joined us.

Where did you read this?
I think the new manager has said he left the door open for Rooney - Fines Mori, Garbutt, Galloway and Bolasie wont be going anywhere

We should look at Galloway if he is actually being moved on - Quality young player

yes , i have watched Villa a lot , and he's worth 10 but will prob go for between 5 and 8. You get what you pay for. We really need to wake up to what quality players cost.We aren't going to improve in Europe spending 2 - 3 m on defenders anymore than McGinn would improve us. We will not sign a better defender than Chester.
