He wasn't signed to challenge him. He's a project. Maybe a dear one but every report you hear from behind the scenes about him is glowing. Given they're trying to teach him to replace one of our most successful captains, you'd effin hope we'd shell out a bit and be patient.

Maybe Brendan doesn't think it's fair to play him when the rest of the team generally don't kick their arse without Brown on the pitch. Playing him in a role he isn't training for (ie alongside Broony) won't do him any favours with our famously patient support either.
The manager has talked about competing with better teams in a physical sense. He talked about the need to have more power when we signed Ntcham. He is very much the template of a technically good footballer who also has physical attributes to allow him to mix it, although he could probably do with upping his pitch coverage and pressing at times, which will presumably come with age, coaching and development.

I've no doubt this was part of the thinking behind the move for Kouassi too, and it has worked out a bit differently. In fairness, the first six to ten months were mostly a write off due to him getting malaria then getting an ankle injury at the start of this season.

I also feel like we probably feel like we need to act more quickly to acquire players we think are diamonds in the rough because they get will soon be elevated out of our wage and fee bracket. There is inherently a greater level of risk in that.
He's still only 20...I guess you could look at him as a lower profile equivalent of Odegaard. A highly thought of youngster who will cost that bit extra but will, hopefully, pay off big time further down the line.

Chelsea pay some wild fees for highly promising youngsters, some work, some don't. I think Kouassi is in that pool of players, very highly thought of, pay big now and reap the rewards further down the line after further development.

What I found strange about Kouassi last year is that he always seems to make squad but not get game time. There were planty of games where I thought why doesn't he get 10-15mins now game is won. I wonder if there is extra fee with number of appearances?

Santi Cazorla is a free agent, rumoured he may end up with Villarreal.

Could be with a punt for a season or two.

I don't think there were that many games last season where we were 3 or more goals to the good and able to give fringe players a run-out for the last 15 minutes (Easter Road taught us that a 2 goal lead can be wiped out pretty quickly!).

Added to that, on many occasions when we did have the luxury of making subs just for the sake of it there were probably more pressing requirements to rest players in other positions or give match time to first choice players coming back from injury. I can also just imaging the reaction from some of the expert tacticians in the support if we were cruising to victory and brought on a "defensive" player like Kouassi as our final sub leaving the likes of Roberts or Edouard kicking their heels on the bench

Anyhoo, I'd seriously hope that we'd never be in a situation where leaving a player on the bench to avoid triggering an extra payment was even a consideration.

Nearly lost his foot to gangrene.

Arsenal think it's too much of a risk. Tbh, I'd be thinking of taking it easy if I was him. A bad knock on that and who knows.

Profit aside weird as eff selling a guy you have just bought.

Good shout for the Huns in that case.

I’m sure they would suggest he was suffering from Gangreblue.

Robert Jarni was another weird one. Bought by Coventry at the start of a summer, sold to Real Madrid for a profit by the end.

Never played one minute for Coventry. Sure he was gutted with how things transpired

He was at Wolves in 15/16. Sold to Bournemouth for 2016/17 and then loaned back to Wolves for the second half of 17/18.

I can only assume that in one of those deals there has been an appearances clause triggered, or a mandatory purchase clause for a set fee.

Plus as you say they may now make a profit.

They had an option to buy him at a pre-agreed fee as part of a loan deal and realised the opportunity was there to make a quick and easy £2 million profit. Would be like us signing Edouard for whatever the agreed price is with PSG and immediately selling him which, while unlikely, isn’t completely outwith the realms of possibility.

David Unsworth signed for West 'Am, then signed for Everton a few days later. As far as I recall, the Hammers blamed his wife, but Unsworth claimed his agent never told him that Everton made an offer for him, cos West Ham were offering a much larger agent fee...

Or was it Aston Villa?
