CELTIC SET TO SECURE SUPERB DEFENSIVE SIGNING

As the dust settles on yet another remarkable season for Celtic, Brendan Rodgers and the club’s hierarchy could be forgiven for relaxing somewhat. With eyes set on improved performances in Europe and continued domestic domination, however, that is believed to be far from the case.

The pursuit of further summer recruits is very much on the agenda at Celtic Park, and it’s believed that the club’s manager wants deals tied up as early as this week.

One name that has been linked recently is that of Willem II’s Elmo Lieftink, a defensive-minded utility man with the ability to play across the backline and in midfield.

Despite being something of a late bloomer, only making his first senior start at the age of 22, Lieftink is believed to have made an impact on the Scottish giants’ scouts and, when looking at Willem II’s performances with and without him this season, it’s easy to see why:

(Can't get the picture in???)

The 24-year-old appeared in just 21 of his side’s 34 Eredivisie games this season, but the upturn in their performances in games in which he appeared was remarkable.

While average goals per game went up markedly and average shots conceded on their goal per game plummeted, the truly remarkable statistic was also the most important – win percentage.

Willem II’s ratio shot up by a stunning 23% when Lieftink was selected, helping the Tilburg-based club to claim 13th place in the Dutch top flight and, arguably, saving them from the ignominy of relegation in the process.

Brendan Rodgers is all about bringing the best out of players with the raw materials to succeed at the top level, and Lieftink certainly falls into that category. He may be something of a rough diamond but, at Celtic, he could become a true gem of a player and, for that reason alone, this is a transfer for Celtic fans to get excited about.

Had a google, can't find much - looks a bit like Willo Flood :ph43r:

Does anyone know if he's left footed or what, think we need a lefty (Compper :ffs: ) & this guy might apparantly cover LB? (Compper :ffs: ).
We know Brendan like versatility in his players, speaks of game intellegence required in order to fulfill various positions, one of the reasons he likes Callum so much. That South African CB we came close to signing also covered various defensive positions - maybe Brendan sees the need for someone like Callum in the defensive side of the squad?

Anyway, it's a rumour to get us thinking about as well as McGinn

Not a rumour just a suggestion. I've always quite like the look of that Aboubakar at Fulham. Quick wikipedia search confirms he only scored 7 in 30 for them this season, however I think Mitrovic coming in on loan, shifted him to the bench for the 2nd part of the season.

A mate of my mates taxi driving sister never told me this so not a rumour but.....

....talking of right backs I watched Millwall's run-in and was mightily impressed by Mahlon Romeo. Fast as a fast thing with a fair bit of skill.

Just saying

We're not far off it, I think we had a 'disappointing window so far' earlier.

We're squandering our chance to win the Summer Transfer Window Cup.

Liverpool have spunked £100m already, and we haven't signed anyone yet.

A disgrace.

Don't be fooled, everyone would rather have their transfer business done before the start of August on a normal season. With the World Cup on this year, domestic teams would love to have their business done even earlier than that. Always easier said than done, of course. I'd definitely expect to have an answer to French Eddie's situation by the start of the World Cup though. I'd be disappointed if we didn't given the position we hold.
