Thought Rodgers had already stated that Kouassi was Brown's long-term replacement?
If we sign McGinn, I’d say that was a pretty clear sign that Kouassi isn’t in the picture. His lack of opportunities last season - even towards the end of the season when other fringe players were getting a run out and Brown looked in need of a break - spoke volumes.
Surely not ANOTHER waste of money? Not much of a judge of player that he's never worked with before is our Brendan :(

Yep. I’m into this.

Very rare that I fancy SPFL players for Celtic. Armstrong and Griffiths (loan, pedants) were probably the last two.

Think he has the potential to be Broony’s replacement, and is versatile enough to challenge Ntcham and possibly Rogic in the meantime.
 not against signing him but... no. Good option off the bench at best.

I don't know where the £2.5 million figure (+ Scott Allan) has come from but, if he has only one year left on his contract, that would be a huge fee.

I'm not as against the McGinn signing as I would have been, say, in January.

Like it or not, Brown is going to have to be replaced or at least allowed the chance to rest over the coming seasons. Last season, I think we won one game when Brown wasn't in the team, a scrappy 1-0 win against Dundee at home. All the others we drew or lost. I think having McGinn in there for those games would have seen us retain an energy and fight that sometimes goes when Brown isn't there.

Be mad not to go for John McGinn. Especially if we can get him for around £2.5million. He’s the most consistent performer against Celtic. 230 first team appearances for a 23 year old can’t be knocked. We’ve all seen Rodgers development in players. More so than Calum McGregor this season. We would be stupid not to think McGinn would get better and better. Rodgers always talks about he wants players with a drive to get better. Think you can see it with McGinn. He certainly shows it on the pitch. Also with Armstrong away within the year, Bitton also most likely on that same boat, Brown a year older and if Ntcham has the season which I think he will next season he’ll be attracting interest from everywhere. We always need to be thinking ahead as a club.
Agree completely. I can see McGinn as the long-term replacement for Broony. He’s got the right mind set and attitude. Plus, he’s one of us and that’s always a bonus!
Scott Brown saying he’s the toughest opponent he’s had all season says it all. I wouldn’t be surprised if Brown and Rodgers have spoke about it and both agreed he’s someone we should have at the club. Aye you can see that in his performances against Celtic. Finds an extra gear. Still only 23 too. Plenty time to improve.
The shift in their comments about McGinn between the two games at Easter Road last season was quite noticeable.

First game: "There is no contest," said Celtic boss Rodgers. "Scott was the exceptional midfield player on the pitch."

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/42299415

Brown was calling him the "toughest opponent" after the second game, as you say.

It's like they hadn't seriously considered him before and were a bit irritated by the comparison, but they've had more of a look over the course of this season.

McGinn isn’t of a standard where he would be a first pick for us just now but there is plenty of room for improvement. I think he’s someone who would get a lot better playing with a higher standard of teammate.

Against the tide a bit here but I think McGinn would be a really good player for us. With better players around him and Brendan coaching him I think he will step up to be a very good Celtic player. I've always been impressed by him.

I think McGinn is a good signing. He's been the best player against us all season - yes, better than McGeough - and has chipped in with his fair amount of goals. He wins a lot of fouls, makes himself a pest for opposition teams and brings all of the energy to the current Hibs team. McGeough might play the prettier stuff, but he couldn't do that if it weren't for McGinn.

How long does Scott Allan have left on his contract?
Signed for four years in 2015, so one year left.

Wondering if they might go with £2.5M + a season loan. This would be (very slightly) better value for Celtic as Allan then couldn't play in the Hibs - Celtic games next year. Also stops the deal breaking down over Allan having to agree a contract with Hibs.

They did that before when Allan moved to Celtic, as Liam Henderson got sent out for a season in part-exchange.

McGinn's style of play is more akin to that of Ntcham or Armstrong. Brown's role is to sit in front of defence and calm things down, play simple passes and defend when required. As he said recently he re-invented himself in that role and is now playing it so well that we look less assured more panicked when he is out of the team.

Now there's nothing to suggest that McGinn couldn't emulate Brown's evolution to that role when he gets older, but McGinn isn't that player at the moment. Bitton is more suited to the Brown role, but doesn't have the aggression or the feistiness of Brown.

I like the 'idea' of an energetic Celtic supporting 23 year old Scot in midfield. There would be no bedding in process to Scottish culture, he would be ready to go. However, in the several matches I have watched him in, I have seen as many flaws as strengths.

Flaws include holding on to the ball too long, attempting to play his way out of a group of players, only to be robbed and left on his backside. This flaw is as much a decision making choice as anything, so it could be coached out of him.

Another more significant flaw was that on several occasions he needed a second touch when receiving a pass. He was no Tom Rogic in that respect. He usually controlled the ball eventually but only after fielding a tackle from an opponent, and sometimes the tackles were borderline yellow cards. In Europe this lack of control would be heavily punished and many of his tackles would be similarly punished. This flaw is harder for a coach to remove.

On a plus note, as well as his aggression, he is quite a good passer of the ball from midfield to attack.

He's definitely a mixed bag.

mcginn for 2.5m should be a no brainer with allan going the other way

mcgregor was a late developer when he came back to us and 25 in a couple of weeks, if rodgers can work his magic with mcginn in a similar way its good value

ntcham if he continues to progress will be back down south in a couple of years so it makes sense

would still like a hard nut for europe
