In the absence of Rogic, Boyata, Lustig and KT -

We'd line up ----

-------------------------Gordon------------------
-----Hendry--------- Jozo ----------Ajer-----
Forrest Brown Ntcham McGinn McGregor
---------Dembele ---------Edouard----------

Obviously I'm looking at the rumored move for McGinn and the KT thread for this idea but after watching our line up today and Sinclair playing in the earlier game, it's not as much a stretch as some might think.
Sorry Bawman, you just talking about the 1st qualifying round? Okay, I can ubderstand that but still think it is a pretty grim situation to be in.
Im looking at our current predicament and a single bid for a player and trying to work out what it adds up to.

I just can't imagine, given the departures both real and rumored, alongside the players at the world cup, we're bidding for McGinn as a squad player. I really think we are about to change our formation and McGinn is an important piece of that change.

Maybe we're just bidding for him because he's available? I'd be amazed if he was the kind of player we'd plot a team around. He'll probably just get shoehorned in to whatever role Brendan has use for him in. And there's no way we sign Rogic up on a new deal to drop him. As it stands, he's far more important to the team than John McGinn.

Sorry I thought you'd refuted talking exclusively about that scenario with your previous post.

Our first competitive game is in a week and we've brought in an excellent long striker. We'll be without 2 of our first choice defenders, our main creative midfielder and, god forbid, the only real attacking threat we have down the left side.

Get your act together Celtic.

Even with better players around him not to mention the coaching, fitness and dietary standards our back room staff offer??

I would be genuinely concerned going into any competitive game with that back line, even if they play McGregor at LB it still looks very weak. There seems to be an element of complacency around signing at least one defender, and I think just about everyone on here expected us to sign players early in the window as that seemed to be the noises coming out of the club. Even when Lustig, Gamboa and Boyata return I would say we are still woefully short of a decent defence if we have real intentions of making progress in Europe this season. What makes it more disappointing is the fact we were handed circa £7.5m for VVD's move to Liverpool and another £7m for Armstrong, I would have expected us to spend at least this amount on players but here we are a week before playing our first competitive game of the season having signed one player. Doesn't really fill you with confidence!

He’d help us continue to dominate in Scotland, but we’d do that anyway. He wouldn’t improve us in Europe, which is what we should be aiming for.

Current squad & McGinn, huge game, pick your first 11 and he wouldn’t be near it. That’s why he’s not any kind of improvement.

Other side of that though, we've lost players 12/13 ( armstrong/Roberts) from our squad. They do need replaced.

I'm not for McGinn really but we can't work on just what our perceived XI will be. 60 odd games to play. McGinn is relatively versatile.

As long as he's looked upon as a squad boost and we have 4/5 first team players coming in. I have no problems with that.

Agree, he’s a squad player who’ll play when our first choice players need a rest between the big games. Or he should be. :ph43r:

If we sign McGinn as a squad player then fair enough, but if that happens then Rodgers “quality not quantity” statement looks even more ridiculous. Probably get Shinnie to replace Tierney anol.

It was always ridiculous. Just some folk in here lapped it up.

We bought Johnny Hayes FFS.

I’m not saying he will be a first team starter far from it, it could go either way as with all transfers, I just think he’d improve here as a player

I suppose a valid question is whether or not McGinn's better now than Armstrong was before we signed him, or for that matter if he's better than Armstrong was before Rodgers took over.

I know Brendan's not a miracle worker or anything, but we all commented on how he managed to get so much more out of Armstrong (among others) in his first season in particular. If he thinks he can do something similar with McGinn then so be it.

He might not be in our first choice XI, but we need someone in that position who's good enough not only to fill in for the first choice players when needed, but to keep them on their toes. One way or another complacency has been a big problem for Celtic for as long as any of us have been watching, so we need our squad players to be pushing for a place in the first team, not just happily sitting on the bench chatting to each other.

Also, I'd imagine that signing him would allow us to send Kouassi and maybe Ewan Henderson out on loan to get the match experience that they'll need if they're ever going to have a career with us.

I am not impressed with where we are in regard to signing players in this transfer window.
The players that have left, we knew were going to leave.
We knew what players were going to the world cup.
We haven't sold anyone ' out of the blue" .
Our squad is exactly what we thought it would be at this stage of the close season. So unless BR believes that players like Christie,Hayes,Allen,Compper etc are good enough then we are not running this business of a football club very well.

Edit.. when I say business I mean the playing staff side, not the money side..
