Sky sources understand Celtic have had a bid rejected for Hibernian midfielder John McGinn.
McGinn, who won the Scottish Cup with Hibernian in 2016, has just one year left on his contract and has been subject of interest from clubs’ in the Premier League in England.

CELTIC have made a move to land Scotland star John McGinn and have also enquired about Liverpool winger Harry Wilson.

The Scottish champions made an official approach to Hibs about McGinn.

Express Sport understands that an opening offer has been turned but talks will continue.

The highly-rated midfielder was rated at £3 million in the last window although he is now in the final year of his contract.

Celtic could also offer midfielder Scott Allan, who was on loan at Hibs last season, on top of any cash deal.

Brendan Rodgers is keen to add to his squad and has already sold midfielder Stuart Armstrong to Southampton for £7 million while Patrick Roberts has returned to Manchester City after a successful loan.

Rodgers has been a long-term admirer of McGinn and is keen to try and get a deal done ahead of the Champions League opener against Alashkert next week.

McGinn has been a target of a number of English clubs, including Nottingham Forest, but he has never hidden his desire to play for his boyhood heroes.

Celtic have also asked Liverpool about Welsh cap Wilson's availability.

Liverpool have told them he is available and the financial package it would take for a loan but that has not been followed up as yet.

Transfer chief Lee Congleton is also looking at other options.

Rodgers knows Wilson well from his own time at Liverpool.

He is also aware the 21-year-old did well at Hull City last season and is not short of admirers.

The Tigers want him back while English Championship rivals Norwich City also want him.

Celtic's pursuit of a winger has also become more paramount with the news that Jonny Hayes will miss the Champions League trip to Armenia.

The Republic of Ireland cap has been ruled out for 10 days with an injury suffered in the weekend defeat to Bohemians.

Rodgers, who will see his team take on Sparta Prague tonight, has also held talks with out-of-contract Hull defender Moses Odubajo since he has been in Austria.

There is also the possibility of further outgoing with Celtic preparing a £25 million bid for Kieran Tierney. It remains to be seen if that will even be entertained by the Parkhead hierarchy.

At least the Moussa talk is basically non-existant.
When I saw a video of the squad training in Austria, the first thing that struck me was how slim Moussa looked. A bit puzzling that he looked overweight when he was playing and training regularly in the second half of the season, then lost weight when he was on holiday for a month. Hopefully it means he is looking to hit the ground running this season. Even if it is to attract the attention of some big hitters, it is all good.
Yeah he does look really lean. He turned like a 267 when he came back from injury then began to hit his stride again.

Hopefully an injury free season and he can leave a hero.

I'm a tad disappointed we are not going for someone a step up from McGinn. Don't get me wrong I think he's a decent enough player with potential to improve further but in terms of going that step further in Europe it's not what I was hoping for.

I honestly can't see him getting in the team and one could argue we're weaker by letting Armstrong go and bringing in McGinn.

You could argue it, but Armstrong did nothing last year and didn't want to be here. McGinn will improve. If we get a good 8 months or so out of him over the piece he'll have matched Armstrong at least.

We were never going to sign a 'ready' player when we have Ntcham and Brown there to play most games.

We won't progress in Europe then. We should always be looking to improve. I agree Armstrong was poor last season but if you're asking me who the better player is or who I'd rather in my team I would say Armstrong every day of the week. There's a reason Southampton paid £7m for him.

McGinn won't get ahead of Brown or Ntcham. Would he even get a game ahead of McGregor or a fully fit Biton? I'm not convinced he would at this moment. A strange signing for me.

If we're going to sign him, sign him for free in 6 months.

Eff Hibs.
He'll be off to Sunderland before then. I think the eventual price will be determined by how much another club will be willing to pay for him and whether we're prepared to get close enough to that for the player's personal preference to matter.

If we want him we're going to have to get him this window. Unless Hibs are offered stupid money from an English club, he'll be a Celtic player by the end of the summer.

NO DEAL Hibs reject £1.5m bid from Celtic for Scotland star John McGinn
THE Hoops are looking to land the 23-year-old as a replacement for Stuart Armstrong who joined Premier League side Southampton but the Hibees are holding out for more cash.

Happy enough that we are pursuing McGinn.

Replacing one central midfielder we bought from a Scottish club with another.

I don’t get the posts saying he won’t improve us, maybe not in the CL but not every signing needs to. Our league form last season can be improved upon.

He’s 23 and despite not being a youngster he’s hardly the finished article. He’s played in the first teams for Hibs and St Mirren for around 5 years. Won the Scottish and league cup and the Championship. So clearly picked up a winning mentality. A mentality that Armstrong admitted it took him a while to develop.

Has the attributes to be a really good player for us. Might surprise a few.

Get it done Celtic.

Reckon Hibs will deal for around £2.5-£3million plus Scott Allan which for me is a very fair price considering he’s last year of contract. Be a good addition who will get better and better.

2 plus Allan. Should do it. I'd be wary of going above that.
