If you were buying a centre half you would think you'd want them in and familiarized with the other centre half/halves and forming partnerships ahead of vital CL qualifiers...
Marvin has already met Kris :ph43r:

many of his signings have been average/rubbish, theres no getting away from that. Whether its the fault of the scouts or someone else thats another debate.

Wonder what happened to the "blue ribbon" signing we used to eagerly anticipate every transfer window. Mind you, I don't think we ever got one.

how many potential signings that have gone on to be quality players in the last two seasons have PL refused to splash out on

BR and his team could have "discovered" a bunch of players that PL wouldn't fund, we can't know

Think it might have been a few weeks ago when we committed a potential £9m on a young striker

I think we can know from the number of times Brendan is at pains to point out what a close relationship he has with PL/the Board and how he has been happy with the deals he's being able to do.

Of course he could be a glib and shameless liar...

Never mind slagging off BR & the scouting dept...how often do our so called experts get it wrong ??
I've read plenty who raved about Anti Niemi who we should have signed ahead of Boruc...or that Paul Telfer & Gary Caldwell weren't CL class...seemed to do OK from what I saw
or that Scott McDonald was nowhere near CL class...another who proved people wrong.

Then we splashed the cash on Gravesen who was hailed a major signing but disappointed. In Europe Di Canio - PVH - Cadette didn't delivery to the extent that McDonald & Kenny Misser did against expectations of fans.

The issue is the signings that never looked like a good idea in the first place.

Most people accept that there's an element of luck with signings like Kouassi. Sometimes you get a Wanyama, sometimes you get an Amido Balde. That's the chance you take when you're trying to scoop up talented players before the rest of Europe notices them. Not that I'm writing Kouassi off at this stage.

But some of Rodgers' signings are hard to understand.

Paying over £1mill for Johnny Hayes in the summer when he'd been available for free 6 months earlier. A 30-year-old winger on a 3 year deal. Then we sign Roberts, making Hayes our 3rd choice right-mid. Everything about that scenario screamed waste of money.

Compper- Commons was pilloried for this at the time, but he said it looked like a mistake straight away and he was 100% right. A 32-year-old who'd hardly played the previous season, not ready to hit the ground running. Still has 2 years left on his deal. According to (IIRC) Remy on the BtM podcast, we signed him because Congerton wanted him at Hamburg 5 years ago. If that's true, it's just a bizarre signing.

Giving DeVries a new deal after we knew he wasn't good enough. It's hard to see any rationale for that other than Rodgers liking him personally.

Musonda- if the figures reported at the time were correct, we either spent, or were due to spend, 5mill Euros on him for an 18 month loan (I think that's fee + wages). And he never looked a player from the off. Kilmarnock away and St Johnstone at home he looked out of his depth. We've cancelled the deal and it's now regarded as no harm no foul, but he must have cost nearly £1mill in wages alone, plus whatever fee was involved, if any. Absolutely criminal.

Then there's Congerton himself. You could hardly name two clubs in Europe who've underperformed as badly as Hamburg and Sunderland in the last few years. Not saying that's Congerton's fault, but it's another one of those that just looks like a bad idea from the off. Hopefully I'm wrong.

Obviously there have been some great signings in there too. And Rodgers is a brilliant coach and manager. But his recruitment is easily the worst thing about his otherwise stellar time here so far.

I was referring to the many posts in previous transfer threads calling for a large chunk of cash to be spent on a "blue ribbon" signing. I was being facetious. I won't bother doing that again.

PS. I am aware of Edouard. So we did get one!

I think Hayes was signed to provide cover for KT or as WB when we play with three.

Commper is strange to understand. Maybe he will come good though.

Musonda looked good in small patches for Chelsea. I thought he would walk it in spl. I think it may be a matter of attitude rather than talent as he seemed to show promise in CL.

DDV looked excellent in preseason last year. I was expecting him to become number one.

Alternatively. Rodgers signed Hayes after a great season (when he was under contract) and added him to the squad providing cover in a number of positions.

Compper too, added in January and given 6 months to bed in. He will now provide cover in our most important part of the season, one where a over the last 2 seasons we have been riddled with injuries and had to play O’Connell and then Bitton last season for CL qualifiers. Boyata & Lustig at World Cup, might just see compper being a very handy player to have as back up and someone making minimal fuss if he doesn’t play very week is vital for a squad. Compper has also apparently been working closely with Ajer. That experienced pro being about always helps young players. We always seem to get our knickers in a twist about certain players not playing, but the outlay for the club has been minimal so far, and might prove to be important.

People say this thing about Hayes providing cover in a number of positions, but he really only ever played at right wing or (less often) left wing. He was 3rd choice on the right and wasn't even 2nd choice to Sinclair on the left (Edouard or McGregor would get the nod ahead of him). He hardly ever played left wing back, if at all. I can't think of any examples of him doing so off the top of my head.

Compper isn't "bedding in", he's just not been good enough. People gave it the "bedding in" patter about Musonda and it was nonsense then too. Compper was/is 5th choice, which obviously wasn't the intention when we paid a fee for a guy that age from RB Leipzig. And he's not much use as cover this summer given that he's hardly kicked a ball in 18 months. He couldn't get a game in dead-rubbers at the end of the season, but apparently the plan is to chuck him into a £30mill CL qualifier? Don't think so.

How can Gerinho, not see that about Compper? We've all watched this guy in numerous games since he signed - he's slow, he passes poorly, he hasn't any pace and he's always injured.

He will never bed in. He will never amount to anything. PUNT!
