If our scouting department can’t replace Boyata for £5m or under, they shouldn’t be at club.

Plus, he’s got 12 months on contract. It would be a very good deal for us.
I'd bite yer hand off for 7 Million.
Totally agree. 7 Million doesn't get you a Boyata replacement in England, but that is NOT where we should be shopping.

If you bought VVD for 3.5 mil, surely you can get a replacement for Boyata for 7 mil. Surely you could get 2
We signed VVD 5 years ago, prices have continued to go mental since then, no chance we'd get a player of equivalent standard for anywhere near £3.5million these days.

To replace Boyata like for like (e.g. centre half at the world cup with a decent nation that has realistic expectation to reach at least the quarter finals) you'd be well over £10million and a hefty transfer fee.

I would agree though, that if it looks like he's not extending his contract we should probably deal at £7million rather than let him go for nowt if that's the best offer we get.

If he thinks we're good enough at the back he must change his CL tactics, if we get there, to protect them more. We'll see, but regardless its very worrying if we don't get someone to help at LB.
If the tactics don't change in the CL then it won't make a difference if we sign two of the best centre halves in the world.....they'd still end up looking like diddies if the midfield can't hold on to the ball.

Short memories from club if we don’t strengthen defence

We were a joke in Europe last season

Laughable trying to play it out from back v CL teams and Gordon distribution also crap

Tierney being asked to do far too much over season and lustig way off it too

Great if we keep all strikers plus rogic but same defence same results

Disappointed won’t get near it if they don’t address defence
I don’t think it’s the quality of our defenders that caused us humiliation in Europe last season (and the season before) as much as it was the way we played and our managers naivity / stubbornness. We’ve gone much further in Europe and had some of our best ever results with a CB pairing of McManus and Caldwell.

Domestically our defence wasn’t the problem, it was the other end which let us down. We were out scored by an abject Huns team, dropping far too many points and looking totally blunt at times.

I do think it is madness, however, going into another season without adequate fullback cover for tierney and lustig. I don’t, for one minute, believe BR is content with miler, ralsto, gamboa and hendry

Metro this morning (I know, I know) has a spread saying that Brendan is relatively content and happy with his lot as it stands. On the lookout if anything comes up but he's relaxed.

Taking Jozo's comments about staying too from a few weeks ago, I genuinely think our priority might be sorting out Boyata on a new deal and going with what we have in the middle of defence. Rightly or wrongly.
The article will have came from this

Cheers

Always enjoy listening to him, even if he doesn't always say what I want to hear

Boyata is a good cb. If Jozo can find some form then it's a decent pairing. I'd definitely say a new rb is needed as Lustig hasn't been at the races for a while.

Although it is good we have signed Bain and Edouard on long time deals we have no new faces in the squad since last season unless you count Morgan.

You can't stand still you have to keep improving or your rivals will finally catch up with you no matter what line of business you are in.

We need to sign at least 1 decent experienced centre back who is ready to go straight into the team and ideally a right back as well.

Anyone who believes Rodgers means that he is happy with defence is reading it wrong imo. He knows we need strengthening but hopefully at last he realises we don’t need quantity but quality like he has said last 2 years then ignored it and signed crap like Hayes, Hendry and ddv. We are weaker than where we where at the end of season and that needs rectifying

If we are relying on Scott Sinclair recovering his form next season we are in bother with that too.

Hopefully we're happy with the defence the same way we were happy with two strikers last season. Although I suspect it was the injuries to Griffiths and Dembele gave us a boot up the arse.

Either Jozo or Boyata, or both, will get injured. For the fourth window in a row, we need better in there regardless of injuries. I thought Rodgers spotted this immediately when he got Toure in, but it doesn't seem too pressing for him.

Hopefully not.

You think the price we paid for someone like Van Dijk five years ago is near enough the price we'd paid now? No chance.

Groningen got absolutely burned by that transfer. Clubs are getting wise to not underselling their top talent. We got barely two years out of him and received the guts of £20m when we paid them £2.6m.

I honestly don't think people have any idea how the transfer market has changed in little over a year.

It's like the serious problems we have recruiting good defensive players don't really exist, when all the evidence suggest they do. Chancel Mbemba only has a year more left on his contract than Boyata, hasn't played a competitive game for his club since January and is being touted for £8m. Bjorn Engels, one of the defenders that did not get in the Belgian squad ahead of Boyata signed for Olympiakos last summer for £6.4m.

The sooner some people get up to speed about what the value of some of our own players should be, and the problems that come with the higher values of very good players we are trying to recruit, we'll all get on a lot better. Every effing window.
