“Without getting carried away, a club like Rangers should be in the Champions League". YOU CAN DO IT Rangers legend Barry Ferguson insists Steven Gerrard can take the Light Blues to the group stages of the Europa LeagueGers are looking to restore some European pride after being knocked out of Europe in the first round last season by Luxembourg minnows Progres Niederkorn Spoiler: click to toggle By David Friel JUST getting past the Europa League first qualifying round this time would be Progres for Rangers. But Ibrox legend Barry Ferguson has backed Steven Gerrard to lead them all the way to the group stages. Former boss Pedro Caixinha never recovered from losing to Luxembourg minnows Progres Niederkorn at the first hurdle 12 months ago. But Ferguson, who branded that defeat a disaster, believes Gerrard can restore Gers’ Euro pride. The former skipper believes the first qualifier against Macedonians FK Shkupi on July 12 could be the start of something special. He said: “In terms of Europe, it can’t get any worse than last year, can it? That was a shocker of a result. “That’s why it’s important the manager brought new players in early. He’s already mentioned that he wants them fit and ready for the European games. “It’s important that Rangers are in the group stages. Last season was a disaster. The Progres defeat was an embarrassment, disastrous. “Take nothing away from the team from Luxembourg, but Rangers should be beating them. “It looked like Rangers didn’t want it as much as Progres. “But I’m sure they’ll do it this year. I can sense a different mentality this time. “Getting off to a good start in the Europa League could be a real positive for them. It would give them a morale boost, 100 per cent. “Without getting carried away, a club like Rangers should be in the Champions League. “But for now it’s about getting through the qualifying rounds of the Europa. “There will be difficult games because you go into some of them blind. You don’t know too much about the teams you play. “But Rangers must get into the group stages.” Gerrard has signed almost an entire new team and the players will take time to gel. But Ferguson believes they will knit together much better than Caixinha’s foreign imports. Gerrard has opted for a British spine in the likes of Allan McGregor, Connor Goldson and Scott Arfield and Ferguson insists that is a smart move. He said: “Rangers have signed a lot of players in the last few windows, but this time it’s a different calibre of player they’ve brought in. “I’ve seen a lot of players come up and struggle to adapt to Scottish football, but I’m sure these guys won’t because they’ve got good pedigrees. “As a goalkeeper, McGregor is unbelievable, but the biggest thing for me is that Rangers need characters with a certain mentality and he brings that. “If you are building a team you’ve got to go through the spine and I think that’s what he’s looking at, then building round about it. “It looks to me as if he’s getting a kind of physical presence about them which I felt they lacked last season. “I’m impressed by the level of the signings so far. Good players cost money in a transfer fee or wages. So credit to the board because they’ve backed him.” Ferguson was a dominant midfield presence during his Gers days and he expects Gerrard to add a leader in the engine room. But he also hopes the new manager makes space for Ross McCrorie in midfield too. He said: “For me, they do need a proper leader in the middle of the park and there’s no one better to identify that than Steven Gerrard. “It’s a key position. There are good players in there, but I would probably think he is trying to get another in. “Personally, I like McCrorie in front of the two centre-backs. I thought he got unjust criticism last season. “Physically he has still not matured and he’s young, but I think he could be a very good Rangers player in the future. I like him sitting in the middle of the park. I saw that at Pittodrie just before the end of the season. “I thought he was Rangers’ best player and I feel all his best games have been in the middle of the park. “I’m trying not to get too carried away, but it’s exciting. “I just hope we have a better season than last year and try and get a bit of silverware and try to progress.” Fergsuon was speaking at the ‘Live it for Lee’ annual charity match in memory of Lee Jamieson, who tragically lost his battle with leukaemia at the age of just 12. Organised by Lee’s family, profits from yesterday’s match will go to BLOODWISE, a UK charity aiming to fund research into beating blood cancers. https://www.thescottishsun.co.uk/sport/football/2864664/rangers-barry-ferguson-steven-gerrard-light-blues-group-stages-europa-league/ McCrorie either needs to go out on loan at another premiership club or sign for someone else, he won’t develop well at Sevco.

“Asked how much fresh cash will be made available as a result of the share issue which will take place in June, King said: "I met with (company secretary) James Blair on Saturday and we have given the go-ahead for the share issue to commence immediately.”
How did that share issue in June work out?
Is it still June?

Maybe Baz thinks if they get pumped in the EL in one round they will fall in to the CL the next round. Not the sharpest tool in the box is Barry. An oldie
Walter calls Barry Ferguson into his office.
'Barry,' he says, 'I'm worried about your performance the last few games. You've been hopeless, completely off form.'
'Sorry, boss', says Barry. 'I've not been myself lately. I've got a few problems at home.'
'Oh dear,' says Wattie, pretending to care. 'What's up? Wife and sprog okay?’
'Oh they're fine', says Barry. 'It's just that something's really bugging me and I'm losing sleep and everything. I can't concentrate on my football and it's really messing me head up.'
'Whatever's the matter, son?' says Wattie.
'Well, boss', says Barry, 'it's pretty serious. The wife bought this jigsaw puzzle the other day and.....'
'A jigsaw?!!!' thunders Wattie. 'You're playing shampooe because of a jigsaw?!!!'
'OK, boss, OK,' says Barry, 'but.........it's this picture of a tiger and it looks really easy on the box and I'm sure I've got all the bits and everything but I can't do it and it's doing my head in and........and........and it's a tiger and it looks easy.......and can't make the bits fit and, it's really hard, and er, sorry boss and, er, it's a tiger, er,... on the box...er.......sorry boss.'
'OK, OK, OK,' says Wattie, 'bring the jigsaw in and let's have a look at it, it can't be that difficult'
'Oh thanks, boss,' says Barry.
So the next day Ferguson brings the jigsaw into Wattie's office.
'Here it is, boss' he says, showing Wattie the picture on the box. 'Look, boss, it's this tiger, right, and it's a really good picture and everything but I just can't do it and it's really hard and it's doing my head in and it's this picture here of a tiger,' and Barry empties all the pieces from the box all over Wattie's desk. He looks at what's on his desk, looks up with his head in his hands and says to Ferguson...................
'Barry, put the feckin’ Frosties back in the box.'

I don't know if this will make a difference but it seems a bit mad/blase to me to only have 1 friendly before Europe. The rest of the Scottish teams involved including ourselves have at least 3 games lined up before our first European game yet they seem content to go with just one. So basically there could be 8 or 9 players having only played a maximum of 90 minutes together before their first competitive game.
They then have another friendly lined up on the Sunday between the two legs for the 2nd round which if I am reading it right provided they get through they are playing away first on the Thursday.
Seems very poor preparation. Yes getting a level of fitness is very important but actually having the team play against opposition is important especially with so many new players.
Just checked FC Skpje - they are playing quite a few friendlies - going to stick a tenner on them getting through

They could have the hummel cup before their tie. Like the dafabet cup but for the rangers, pollok juniors etc. Good money for the club.

Just checked FC Skpje - they are playing quite a few friendlies - going to stick a tenner on them getting through " After finishing the Macedonian First league in fourth place in the 2017-18 season, Shkupi will be playing in the Europa League qualifiers for the first time."
Those boys will be fired right up for this. It's the biggest match in the club's history and I'll gladly take your word for it that they are packing in the friendlies As you say, one friendly before the match suggests that they're taking this lightly, a bit foolhardy at the best of times but all the more so when there's a new manager and almost a new team of players ...is it 8 they've signed ? So good luck to Shkupi. If they put their hearts and souls into this they have a fighting chance up against a rookie manager who will be anxious to get this banana skin out of the way. The huns will have dark memories of what happened last year and so if Shkupi can frustrate them the hordes will get anxious. Elimination by Shkupi would put the ge55ard revolution under severe pressure right from the off. If a bad start to the domestic campaign were to follow sevco's season could be on the rocks before the end of September. The hordes are expecting a transformation , a team that is going to challenge us. If after 8 games it's clear that not much has changed and that they'll be battling it out with the dons and hibs for 2nd spot the pressure on SG will become very difficult for him. It would all be downhill from there

Cost cutting They've got a closed doors game against The New Saints soon, then Bury before their 1st qualifier, then Wigan in between the legs of their 2nd qualifier (should they get that far).
I agree though that they don't seem to be giving themselves the best preparation. Osijek will likely be the best team they've played when they meet them. I don't know much about Bury but they've just been relegated to League 2 so I can't imagine they'll be any good, especially in pre-season while they're no doubt restructuring their squad.
The whole point of our Sparta Prague and Standard Leige games are for us are to ensure that Rosenborg won't be a sudden jump up in quality. They're not giving themselves that chance. And when you consider that they've signed basically an entire new starting 11, they could really be doing with it.

Forgot about the TNS game as never saw it on their fixture list - again they will have had about 4 games before their first Euro qualifier.
It will be Bury's first match of the pre season and given that their season is ages away will be a glorified friendly for them.
Maybe being highly critical but it seems poor preparation still.....time will tell
Had a check for odds for the Europa league but could not find any yet

They played two games in two days.
