King might well have told SG that there is a £20m warchest for him.

Cue the frustration for SG when, before the ink is dry on his contract, he is told that the £20m warchest is dependant upon him flogging just about all of the existing first team for erm... £20m.
Close will be charging some amount of interest on that

So its going to be like the last two summers when they have won everything before a ball is kicked Broony in someones pocket etc
Essentially yes, they’ll never actually wait and see if someone is good

They think it’s a laudable trait to bang your cheat and proclaim he’s the best shampoo ever before a ball is kicked

Gerard would be better off considering Sunderland job rather than coming to the rolling disaster that is der hun
The Sunderland job is the only one which is less desirable than the Hun job

Sunderland are a shambles of a club
I'd have thought the Sunderland job would probably be one of the easiest going.

They've got a new owner, a decent squad for that level and they'll have the biggest budget in League One by some distance, especially if they punt the likes of Khazri, Ndong and Borini (who are all still on their books).

It'd be the perfect place to cut your teeth as a manager, if it wasn't for the fact that Sunderland is an absolute shampoo-heap of a city.

It's yet further evidence that they have no plan

Five months ago they tried to recruit a manager who has significant relevant managerial experience.... exactly what is needed

Having been knocked back by McInnes they should have continued on that road...loads of candidates.... Tommy Wright for one

Now that idea has been cast to the wind and they're all in on the appointment of a guy who has no experience at all and who knows nothing about Scottish football....absolutely mental...long may they continue in this fashion
It'll sell some jerseys though!

I don't really have a clue what they're thinking there and can't for the life of me see what he's thinking of in considering it.

There is however a very high chance that this will end up being very amusing for everyone else so rock on
Hun culture has always been fur coat and nae knickers. The approach to Gerrard is just another example of the desperate need to be 'seen' (Tore Andre Flo, hover pitch, £10 for every fiver, blah blah blah).

Even after all the humiliation and failure that it's brought they just can't change, even after death - and long may it continue

Quoting limited to 3 levels deep
He was put on the spot by Lineker, and his response was ambivalent.

I feel that IF his personal demands are met, and he can be guaranteed a sizeable transfer budget, he'll go for it. ( He cant say that publicly of course )

But it's not there yet, and Thursday will see whether sevco have unearthed a batty billionaire with deep pockets and eff all sense, or just how politely Gerrard can turn down

a "wonderful first real manager job." to paraphrase Lineker.
I doubt he was put on the spot. Lineker would have told him before going on-air he’d ask about it. Gerrard’s answer was highly rehearsed.
Right down to the "we'll pick it up on Thursday and see if we can progress it" SNIFF. Fibber.

I hope it's Gerrard. Look forward to the total mess. I'd hate them to do something sensible like go for Alex Neil for example.
I think you're right Kev. There are no certainties but the steepness of that particular learning curve is precipitous. I doubt they'll give him more than 3 months of the season. 2 bad results and the clamour for his dismissal and questions of which school he went to will be repeated.

Don't think this deal for Gerrard is all about sevco pulling power.
Perhaps Gerrard knows he's not getting Klopp's no2 position and has chucked toys out of pram and put himself up for Ipox by way of two fingers to klopp. He'd be a muppet to go to Ipox for that reason... Or any reason for that matter!

our favourite blogger John James (still waiting to hear from his lawyer!!) speculated the other day that Brendan had previously offered Gerrard as position as no. 3 here in the summer ...that he had phoned and left him a message after hearing of their interest and was raging that Gerrard has not called him back

make of that what you will ;)

I read that too, and immediately wondered how JJ would have come by such information- particularly in relation to the telephone message.

EDIT for spelling
My thoughts on these things too, same with people who know someone whose dad used to play for Rangers (RIP) or even an agent
Why on earth would an ex employee be any more aware than the man on the street
And especially then blab to his family about it

I watched Gerrard closely tonight, probably for the first time. I don't want to be unfair to the guy but he has the air of a morose, passive-aggressive ned with a charisma bypass. I'd say he's a very bad drunk. He might have been a leader on the park but he makes Murty look like Spartacus off it!

I didn't want him to become their manager -- now I can't wait. Can he (and they) really be that stupid??

Could be a great plan - all your average hun in the street is obsessed with is stopping the ten so another high-profile panicky gamble will keep them limping along until they die for good as Brendan hoists #8 aloft. Means they died trying and since they can't stop it they'll do their best to devalue it by claiming it disnae count. Stevie G if he accepts the moonbeams will be another expensive disaster, which the sevco board are really good at tbf :)

Much more hilarity to come, cannae wait :rocker:

They are raging at the taigs who are calling it out as a shampoo idea. LURKERS - if they are only saying that because it's Ranjurs (and they hate Ranjurs, those fenian basturts), they will look pretty stupid when he's a massive success - no? Remember you had all this nonsense with pedro when it was the media and Scottish xhenophobia, rather than him just being shampoo???

Lots of papers now saying Gerrard has agreed 3 year deal.
Hope he's got a prenuptial agreed.

Marriage made in hell. 😂
Neither Sevco’s website nor the bbc says it, I’ll wait for one of those before I celebrate

Can see Gerrard ending up as assistant to Klopp and tell rangers to feck off
He wouldn’t be on TV openly discussing timeframes for talks unless he was pretty certain he was the only candidate and the deal was all but done. Only thing I can see stopping this now would be for him to make demands which can’t be met - and I’m sure they’ll just lie to him anyway and tell him what he wants to hear.
Who knows. Perhaps the speculation and press coverage suits him and he is using them. He will, as most players or ex players do, have an ego and this might apply to a youth coach who wants to develop himself.

If he has something else up his sleeve, or is considering embarking on that, then perhaps he's quite happy. Whatever he's doing, and whatever he's considering he will have been advised by expensive agents/ consultants, friends and folk in the know. Football is quite a small world.

I reckon his current contract at Anfield is more than reasonable and if that contract is broken by him, then I imagine Liverpool would want and perhaps be entitled to compensation. I find it hard to envisage that Sevco can pay that, if rumours are correct and it must be difficult to offer an improved contract and fund anyone else that Gerrard needs beside him.

But, what do I know?
