Why are people deluding themselves into thinking this appointment puts Scottish football on the map?

If Christiano Ronaldo retired and got the job as the FC Helsinki coach, does anyone honestly believe millions of fans across Europe would flock to keep up with the results in Finland?

It's absurd. Nobody outwith the UK gives an eff about this. Absolutely nobody.
Because the same kinds of people who don't watch Spanish football but might tune in to watch a classico every now and again will tune in to watch Rodgers v Gerrard. Whilst not quite as glamorous it's undeniably a nice little subplot and a very easy sell for the tv folk. And I think your point about Ronaldo is misplaced, he has legions of young fans who would follow his career wherever he goes. They adore him and if he went to Helskini for some bizarre reason, you can bet the number of international 'fans' would rocket overnight, as would interest in the league. No one is talking about millions of fans here as far as I can see, it's just folk talking about how Rodgers v Gerrard is a much bigger and better sell for international audiences than Deila v The Magic Hat.
Nobody cares mate.
It made a few back pages in the English tabloids last week, along with a few spread- and page-size features. While it won't have folk drooling or calling for the next Celtic Rangers game to be played on Merseyside it will cause a few folk to tune in. Gerrard's not universally loved in England either, there'll be a few pleased to see it blow up in his face. I suspect they won't have to wait too long.

All this talk of Jimmy Bell prompted me to google him.

Posted Image

Don't know if it's just me, but 'Date of Birth: Unknown' cracked me up. Is he some sort of alien from out of space and they've idea when he was born? He's been there for 4 decades and no one knows his birthday? PMSL, bigoted pumpkin.

EDIT: Any idea why I can't get the image to show? Tried uploading to a couple of places and no joy. :(

I doubt if anyone's ever asked him what his birthday is... anyway the answer would probably be "Always on a Friday".

As I said in my earlier post though - UK aside - nobody else in world football will be interested in this. From the garbage getting spouted in the media, you'd think the Real Madrid supporters were huddled round their TV's yesterday waiting for the smoke.

Well the English media certainly seem to have opened their eyes because of it.
Yup. It's a new marketing angle for the TV coverage. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if DD was subsidising it...

The announcement was on the Saturday morning channel 9 news here in Australia. They mentioned that he played under Brendan and that it ensures a massive battle for honours.

I don't recall anyone suggesting that Real Madrid supporters were awaiting news of the next Sevco manager.

The appointment of Gerrard isn't going to suddenly signal a return to the halcyon days of the sixties and seventies when Scottish football was relevant, but it is naive to suggest that it hasn't created a little interest. You refer to the UK aside, but the usual case is that Scottish football is a joke in England - if it is even considered at all. The past couple of days it has been amongst the headline articles in the sport section of The Times website; ordinarily I have to scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page where they keep the Scottish news to find any articles referencing Scottish football.

You and I can appreciate it for the outrageously desperate and fickle move it seems to be, but a former England captain and European Cup winner coming north has clearly generated more interest than usual in Scottish football, and it isn't a bad thing - particularly if it means more eyes on the latest hun calamity.

The Feast of the Immaculate Conception celebrates the solemn celebration of belief in the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is universally celebrated on December 8, nine months before the feast of the Nativity of Mary, which is celebrated on September 8.
