RANGERS legend Ally McCoist has lifted the lid on a bizarre phone call he had with Craig Whyte at the height of the club’s troubles in 2012. Speaking to Si Ferry on Open Goal, the ex-Light Blues striker and gaffer mocked former owner Whyte over the chat.
McCoist said a toe-curling quote from the businessman during their conversation led to gallows humour between him and coaches Ian Durrant and Kenny McDowall as the Ibrox crisis continued. He told ex-Celtic starlet Ferry: “The one thing, if you’re involved in football long enough, you’ll know what I’m talking about…you can smell it. “You can smell it a mile away. There were things happening. “I remember one Friday night…the club had just gone into administration.
“We could see it – we knew it was happening. “I was sitting in the house. We had a game on the Saturday. “I had a glass a wine and my mother was there, and the family. “I thought, ‘I’m phoning him – I’m phoning Craig Whyte’.
“The place [Ibrox] is carnage by the way. “I know he’s sitting in his bolthole – was it Monaco he used to disappear to? “So I phoned him and usual, one ring, brilliant, bang. “He goes, ‘Alistair, how are you?’ “I went, ‘Well it might come as a wee shock to you Craig, funnily enough, not so good – it’s carnage here. People are losing their jobs, you obviously know the club’s in administration. Can you enlighten us? What’s going to happen? Can you give us any information?’ “I’ll never forget his words. “He said, ‘I know Alistair, you’re absolutely spot on. I reckon another couple of days with the tin hats on and we’ll get through this’. “Wow.”
Whyte was cleared of fraudulently taking over Gers after a 31-day trial at the High Court in Glasgow last summer. McCoist added: “I went in the next morning and of course it’s the gallows humour that gets you through. “Any problems we had from then for the next 18 months or two years with Kenny and Durranty, we’d look at each other and I’d say, ‘Another couple of days with the tin hats and we’ll get through this. Come on now, don’t lose your spirit lads. Two days, tin hats’. “You know what it’s like though. You can smell it. “It just wasn’t good.” David Murray controversially sold Rangers to Whyte for £1 in 2011. In February 2012, Gers filed papers at the Court of Session stating they intended to go into administration. It came after HMRC took Gers to court over an unpaid £9million tax bill.
The SPL then deducted 10 points from the club’s league tally which left them 14 points behind Celtic in second place. Within days Whyte admitted to using £24million – the value of the sale of future season tickets – from Ticketus to fund his initial takeover. On June 14 – after a fine, a player-registration embargo and failed takeover bids – the liquidation process was formally underway as the club’s assets were sold to Charles Green’s Sevco Scotland Ltd for £5.5million.
