Having a mindset of a winner is so important, Scotland become a cropper vs teams who have tunnel vision, teams that only focus on their own performance and arent affected by how good the team their playing is. they become more than the sum of their parts, which we almost never do. like northern ireland just now. A lot of these guys should have more confidence to make mistakes, try new things with the ball and move to other countries to play as well. Really think it holds a lot of talented players back.

Not listened to most of the last few. There have been some good ones, pretty funny in parts.

Ferry always talks extremely well of Tommy Burns too, as you'd expect, as do a lot of his interviewees.

The one down side in a lot of them I have watched is the apparent running theme that youth team level players at clubs nowadays don't know how good they've got it compared to what Simon would have you believe were salt mine shifts of days of yore.

This is coming from 30 year old Simon Ferry, interviewing many of his peers, most of whom, whatever way you want to cut it, have contributed to a stand out era of Scottish international and European competition failure.

Well aware there are exceptions to that. However it's a bit much hearing from players who achieved next to nothing at international level through youth to full international ranks talking about what's wrong with the way young players are coached or developed today, like their era was one of unbridled success.
Agree with this completely
My experience as well, enjoyed them and been impressed with si ferry's interview skills, but listening to a guy like Barry Ferguson who although a talented player couldve achieved a lot more, continuously criticise young players today for their attitudes and inteleiigence is a bit rich, esp given his scotland scandal, bankruptcy and getting sacked off clyde. The fact that si ferry was playing for peterhead before the age of 30 suggests wasted potential and a more productive youth team environment couldve made him a better player. Seems a lot of the Scottish players around this time, had a lot of confidence off the park but not on it.
Simon Ferry playing for Peterhead was more to with his back injury, rather than wasting. Or he'd probably still be playing in England. He said he had to drop down to that level and couldn't maintain playing full time because it's agony.

The interviews are okay.

Im in my mid 30's and can totally relate to ferry regarding youth players, however, i am on the totally opposite side of the fence.

I have seen loads of players fall away/miss out as they couldn't deal with/cope with/be arsed with the locker room mentality/unprefessionalism/lad culture.

What he sees as a negative is undoubtedly a step forward.

IMO what you're talking about comes much later in a player's development. The best nations in this sport have superb control of the ball. They are just plain better with the ball at their feet.

Yeah that has been a running theme, sounding a bit like pensioners who lived during the war “these young ones these days don’t know how good they’ve got it”.
I've enjoyed these interviews but I have found that aspect of it quite amusing.

Simon Ferry comes out with some variation on "It wisnae like that in our day, eh?" in any interview with anyone over the age of 28.
