Thompson was brutal.

Banter was about as decent as his right foot. “I got creases put in Sutty’s jeans“. You devil, you.

Thought we might get a few decent stories for a guy that was key at the club through such an entertaining time.

Still, good to remember his long-range swervey effort sailing over McGregor at Celtic Park

Andy McLaren next week. He should have some good tales to tell.

Just watched the Thommo one and like many others was really disappointed, thought he would have far more stories to tell and would have perhaps been a bit more animated on some subjects but it seemed like a bog standard Q&A session for him...hey ho

These interviews are making me question something.

If MON didn’t do training, and the team were never given any tactical instructions, just what was he actually doing?

Seems to be the same way they talk about Walter Smith.

Kinda baffling but I suppose a manager you want to win for can be more effective than endless tactics.

Eventually it'll see you come up short.

Probably the best explanation as to why Smith was terrible in Europe with all this cash he had.

McLaren is some character. Interesting that Celtic had tapped him up in advance of a preoposed £1m move, probably 1997-8?

Mclaren one is the best yet...know his brother John fairly well and he is as bonkers as Andy it seems albeit in a good way.

Proper street player is Andy.

Doing a lot for under privileged kids in Glasgow just now and would have liked that to have been spoken about. That aside probably my favourite interview yet.

United dressing room stories in early days are brilliant.

Easily the best one so far, even as a celtic fan theres only so many times you can listen to seville, helicopter sunday, any tommy gravesen stories etc etc, refreshing to get something different and no airs or graces about Andy, straight talking and from the heart, id go as far as to say it was my favourite football interview ive heard.laughed the whole way through it and also had the sympathy that McLaren could have been much better than he showed, he didnt know how good he was.

Said the proposed move to Celtic was just before Bosman, which was December 95.

Agree with the other posters, thats the best one yet.

The Siggi Johnson story

Sorry for the negativity, but I canny help but feel that McLaren is just another "Glasgow Story". Loads of these stories kicking about, including one in my family. McLaren seems to have had better talent than most, but has just blootered it away. For me its actually quite a sad one.

Fair play to him for turning it around and I understand he is doing a lot in the community now to try and bring through kids from areas that have been neglected. I would like to have heard him speak about this as its part of his story.

Good luck to him.

Difference is Andy had a decent career and actually won things....most of the piss head Glasgow footballers that we all know did it BEFORE they even got anywhere.

Andy actually got to play for more than decent professional teams and THEN blew it.

Agree your comments about what he is up to now. Missed a trick with that subject on him & would have been a fair bit of redemption for him after blowing it as Im sure he thinks himself.

Good guy!

Listened to the McNamara one. Quite liked it. Like most others - I've been pretty underwhelmed by McNamara interviews in the past. In fact, most of that Seville team are pretty dull when interviewed. But Jackie seemed slightly more animated than in any previous interview I've heard from him. Got quite emotional too when talking about his maw dying. Something that has always struck me about McNamara - and which has been hinted at by a few others, is that he sounds like he can handle himself? I'd by no means describe him as a 'dirty' or even a 'hard' player - but most who have played with him always seem to describe him as a big personality in the dressing room and suggest he was able to handle himself. Weird - as he still looks like a wee schoolboy anytime I see him. His story about chasing Sutton around and properly trying to break his legs in training 'cos Sutton was winding him up so much sounded like he wasn't joking.

I heard Ferry on the Off The Ball podcast saying that's planning on flying to Italy this summer to hopefully get an interview with Di Canio. That should be good.

I think the best interviews are with players who weren't genuine top-level athletes. If you're performing at that level, have that mental strength and that fitness - then there's less likelihood you're out on the piss, shagging, or getting up to high-jinx. Take Larsson as an example - he's boring as eff when interviewed. But probably explains why he was so dedicated and clinical as a player. That's why guys like Garry O'Connor and Andy McLaren are such good interviews. Same goes for footballer autobiographies - most of the top-level players ones are boring as eff.

Watching the Ian Durrant/Derek Ferguson one just uploaded today. Doubt I'll make it to the halfway point but it's not terrible, I suppose. They're not the brightest pair but the Souness stories are ok and it passes the time.

Edit - just seen the post above. Di Canio would be great. Also just read some of the reviews of the McLaren interview, think I'll switch to that and give the rest of this one a miss.

Thought it was pretty good too, laughed a good bit during it too. think Ferguson kind of talked over Durrant quite a bit when he tried to tell a few stories but the 2 bounced well off each other
