The pressure of these qualifiers is far too much to cope with in any sane way coming when they do. Season in reverse anxiety.

I don't really see the problem of playing these games this early. We'd be playing meaningless friendlies otherwise. The first two rounds should be against teams who shouldn't be too much trouble getting past. By the time we reach the third round where we'll start to face teams who will pose some problems we'll have four competitive games under our belt. I'd rather this than going into a difficult game completely cold.
The first round is inevitably a bye. The playoff round is usually OK because we are fit and motivated.

I worry about the 2nd round (and now the 3rd round).

We have scraped through a couple of times because you play decent teams and we are still rusty. I think Rosenborg should probably have knocked us out last year.
I wonder if our two “free” games this season will be qualifiers, rather than one qualifier, and one friendly which hardly anyone goes to even when it is “free” .

I hope so, but I suspect not
It’s already been announced that the friendly at home to Standard Liege is included in the season ticket

In the vain hope that this might head off one or two of the annual questions e.g. why is our first leg at home when we're seeded? The draw format and rules are here.

Fill in the blanks with whoever is best after signing some defenders, pump an Irish team, pump a Welsh team, pump a Scandinavian team, pump a middle-eastern team, boom there's yer dinner, CL guaranteed. Straightforward.

If say Belgium are in the final we will have a player who cannot play for us because he is preparing of the final. The whole CL qualification schedule is a joke when teams playing CL qualifiers can have players potentially still playing in the World Cup.

I think the thing is teams who have a player capable of being in the World Cup final in general shouldn't be in these qualifiers. We're stuck there because of the rest of the teams in Scotland not pulling their weight / us being disproportionately better than all of them.

There are a lot of people on here who would be happy if Boyata was unavailable... I'd be pleased for him if he was.

There's no official info on this.

But procedure's explained in today's news on UEFA site, it's just 2 bowls/pots, which would mean there's no groupings/regionalization:

The teams will be separated into two pots of 16 according to their coefficient, with the highest-ranked sides seeded. Balls containing these seeded teams are placed in one bowl, with balls for the unseeded clubs positioned in another.
A ball is taken from each bowl and put into a large empty bowl in the middle, where they are shuffled. The first team drawn plays its first match at home, against the second one drawn.

It's pretty obvious, there's one potentially hard opponent -- Slovakian champion Spartak, the rest are semipro teams (with possible exception of Montenegrin Sutjeska), Spartak is best avoided, next probably Sutjeska, the rest are very easy.

And, however these groupings were made, they're not regional. It would be pretty easy to make the groupings more regional than that. The procedure still remains mystery.
Also: the groupings for the 2nd round will be made after the 1st round draw.

Alashkert put St Johnstone out on away goals in 2015, so we should pump them.
