I see Bert has the following for Round 1.

"For the draw of the 1st round the 34 teams are divided into 1 group of 10 teams and 2 groups of 12 teams.
The draw for the 2nd qualifying round is made before the results of the preliminary round and the 1st qualifying round are known. Clubs of the preliminary round and the 1st qualifying round are seeded by the highest ranking of the clubs involved."

I would suggest we are in line for one of the following:

Vikingur
Crusaders
Suduva
Cork City
Spartaks Jurmala
Valur

Touch wood, this should be straight forward enough.
Suduva - our old friends from the Seville run :)

Quoting limited to 3 levels deep
I absolutely remember both us & the Huns in the group stages of the CL in the same year.
One of the first UK cities to do so, not even London had much more success than us back then.
Might've been the same year as Arsenal & Chelsea did it for the first ever time?

Something like that anyway. Citeh were a blink on the horizon, as were Spurs.
Quite funny to think about now...
There was more than one year when we both played in the CL. Some times league winners qualified automatically and runner up had to qualify. Sometimes both had to qualify - I remember the time we beat some Russian mob on penalties at CP. Deidco had some Danish or Swiss mob IIRC. Even though we won the league to qualify we had a far harder draw with that Russian mob due to the random draw.
That Russian mob were Spartak Moscow. Leading to the famous TB pile on celebration.

The Tommy Burns season...

2007-08, we had one qualifying round against Spartak Moscow where we managed a 1-1 draw away, then in the home leg we scraped a penalty shootout thanks to Boruc. One of the craziest matches I've ever been at and the photo of Tommy launching himself on the pile at the end is fantastic.

It was the beginning of a theme for doing things late that season. Our group of Milan, Benfica and Shakhtar was really tough, but our home form was incredible. We made the last 16 and didn't concede at home with a defense which isn't exactly fondly remembered.

Rangers had two qualifying rounds against Zeta and Red Star Belgrade.

They scraped through those, but after beating Stuttgart at Ibrox then a stunning win in Lyon followed by the anti-football 0-0 with Barcelona they were fairly smug. We had lost two of our first three games and they were top of their group with an away win in the bag.

They then lost their last 3 matches including a hammering from Lyon at Ibrox, dropped into the Uefa Cup and stank up Europe all the way to the Manchester debacle. If they'd not been beaten by Lyon at Ibrox they would have made the last 16. That game was notable for an utter howler of a miss by Darcheville at 1-0 where they'd possibly have hung on for the point.

Highlights of the Spartak match. I've watched the penalties back a few times, but it's easy to forget how dramatic that match was.

We started with the away goal advantage then had a penalty given against us for a dreadful handball decision. That was missed and we scored with a lucky break to McDonald. Fair enough at that stage...

We conceded an equaliser from a corner, they had a man sent off then JVoH misses a penalty of his own.

In the shoot out Nakamura missed first before we got a but lucky and Boruc saved two.

There were some amazing moments that season and that game was definitely one of them.

Wee fat Hun that used to live above me stamped his feet when Naka missed the penalty, when we won I went absolutely mental and banged on the ceiling, wee fat carrot that he was.

Wonder how he is feeling these days  :lolhuns:

I was in the JS that night behind the goals where penalties were taken. Boruc was like superman.

Was a brilliant game. Like yourself I watched the shootout back a few times.

Remember JVoH smashing the bar with his pen then having the guts to take a stunning pen in the shootout. Some excellent pens that night.

Genuinely thought we had the best ‘keeper in Britain if not Europe around that time.

What a game that was. Came over from Belgium for this game. I remember poking my friend during the penalty shoot out when JVOH stepped up: "If he misses again, I'll kill him."

That's one of those games that's etched into my mind. I suspect "some Russian mob" was just flippancy rather than no memory of who they were. Caldwell stepping up to take the first penalty didn't exactly inspire confidence. Naka giving the Russian boy (who had just scored his penalty) a high five as he walked past him and then missing his own penalty was good for the conspiracists among us, but Boruc was having none of it. Saved 2, almost got a hand onto the penultimate one and then jazz hands after he became the hero for the night :chuffed:

I was there that night, The one thing i always remember about this game was the celebration from Tommy Burns. Right at the top of the pile up. What a man

Had a wee look at Berts site. If we get there, presumably we'll be in Pot 4. Looking at the Pot 3 teams, there's only Ludogorets who we'd have a good chance of getting past. Euro football after Xmas looks a big toughie. Sorry to put a big downer on this thread.

Yeah, I'd agree.

Seriously, seriously need to sort ourselves out in this regard.

Invincible & Double Treble is unprecedented & a great time to be a Celt, but we have really always seen ourselves as a European Club.

Lawell rightly still sees us as this & frequently speaks of "remaining relevant", so I've no doubt the board will try doing their best - it's just going to take a long time.
Ciftci leaving is hopefully a lesson to them, but we'll need to learn much faster as Compper has even less time then Nadir did.
To properly compete, we need to maximise everything - especially recruitment & everyone & their dog knew what Ciftci was & we should've known about Compper too.

I can see the attraction to John McGinn & wouldn't put him in that bracket (Compper, Ciftci et al), but we really really need to try getting in guys who can make a genuine difference at European level & stop farting about with the likes of Musonda (who we should also have known ALL about).

Never going to get everything right, but like in my golf game, it's cutting out the stupid mistakes that can bring more success, easier than pulling out scorchers every time.

Cheers for posting that, not seen that for ages.

I think if you're talking about how bad the decision was for their penalty it's only fair to mention the two big decisions that went our way, specifically the red card. That looks a bit dodgy.

Pot 1 looks predictably horrific. There's beatable teams in Pot 2/3.

We'll end up with Real Madrid, Dortmund and Roma though.
