Got to wonder what kind of effect this will have on the players throughout the season having so many competitive games in such a short space of time and that's not even taking into consideration whether we qualify for the group stages of the CL/Europa or not. UEFA really needs to take another look at how teams qualify for the CL. |

If Deila was still in charge we'd get knocked out by Midjyland in the second qualifier with Sviatchenko scoring the winner. |

QR3 will likely be tough because of the geographical spread of the sides more than anything else. QR1 should be easy enough. QR2 will be a difficult tie, but against a relatively known quantity. |

This is huge oversimplification. Gradjanski as other clubs in this area was formed in Austro-Hungarian Empire, continued in Kingdom of Yugoslavia, and then continued in "Independent" Croatia, that was German ally in WWII, and was as Nazi as any other Croatian institution of war years. End of WWII meant socialistic revolution also, and all the clubs were disbanded, and new ones were formed (like Dinamo, Partizan, Red Star). Some clubs like Hajduk Split which were considered leftist survived the revolution, but such cases were really rare. In later years some clubs were allowed to "reinstate" or "sevco" themselves, but they became marginal clubs in cities, which already had a new stronger club established in 1945 taking the players and property of those older clubs. |

I think calling the Independent State of Croatia an 'ally' of Nazi Germany is a huge oversimplification ![]() It was a Nazi puppet state and it was responsible for hanious crimes against humanity. And, yes, I did oversimplify it a bit but there is only so much you can get in a short paragraph. I don't care much for Dinamo Zagreb, if it wasn't obvious already

I was just saying Gradjanski was not Nazi era club, but older, and it was not disbanded because of it, but because new era, starting 1945 after socialistic revolution, needed new men and new institutions. Top division of Kingdom of Yugoslavia 1938/39 (prewar): BASK Belgrade BSK Belgrade Gradjanski Skopje Gradjanski Zagreb Hajduk Split HASK Zagreb Jedinstvo Belgrade Jugoslavija Belgrade SK Ljubljana Slavija Sarajevo Slavija Varazdin Sparta Zemun None of these clubs, except Hajduk Split, made it into this new era. And, I know a lot about henious crimes against humanity in these parts of Balkans, I know also about the share of these crimes done under ideology of the flag you have in your avatar, no, I don't mean the Scottish one. I was at the Icelandic Supercup game between Valur and IBV a few weeks ago. Had a great time. Really friendly fans and staff, and after Valur won my son and I got to meet some of the players. Add that Reykjavik is a fine city (aside from the incredible expense of pretty much everything) and I think I might be checking flights if we were to draw Valur. Getting tickets might be problematic, though, as the ground is tiny. Perhaps Icelandic teams play CL games at the much larger national stadium, which is close by.

Speaking to a Sevconian and have been trying to explain the difficulty that they'll have in getting to the EL groups without being seeded. I got hit with a line about them inheriting the seeding of their beaten opponents due to the draw dates, so they'll actually be seeded and it's all fine. Can someone check my working here? QR1 and 2 are drawn first, they're seeded QR1 and not in QR2. If they were to beat a seeded team with a high enough coefficient in QR2, they'd be seeded for QR3 as that draw is made before QR2. However, the quality of the seeded side who'd have to be disposed of the manage that would be fairly high. If they get accidentally seeded for QR3, their tie at the point of the QR4 draw, ie before QR3 is played, would be so low that they'd be unseeded for QR4. In conclusion, if they took out a decent team in QR2, they might get it easier in QR3, but QR4 will be tough. Examples of teams they'd have to beat are Bordeaux, Burnley, Molde or Partizan. If they ended up unseeded in QR3, they'd have to put out someone like Braga or Copenhagen for this mechanism to work in QR4. The notion that beating a lowly seed in an early round is a free ride to the groups is utter nonsense. Edited by pablo5, 30 May 2018, 05:30 PM.

We should be good enough to get to at least final qualifying round (4) we have a better standard of players that will be rested and ready to go at QR1 than at any other time in recent years

@pablo - Some of the same teams will be seeded in QR3 and unseeded in QR4 (Burnley, Partizan etc.) and they'd all wipe the floor with the huns. I'd be amazed if they made the group stages. Their best bet is probably to remain unseeded and beat a big-ish name in QR3 and take over their seeded spot for QR4. This is who they'd then face (obviously this is if all games except theirs go to the seeded team), and I can't see them beating any of them. I think that's their best bet too. The notion that they'll just beat a seed and it'll be fine does seem to have some traction. Thought it was worth a mention as the same issues about seeding changes and draw dates will apply to us in different ways. |

In fact, UEFA is making so much money from its club competitions that a domestic champion, such as Gibraltar's Lincoln Red Imps, that loses in the preliminary round of Champions League qualifying this summer will still get £430,000 for their trouble. https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/celtic-receive-champions-league-incentive-12652750 At least Dodgy Dave will know how much money will be coming in for their footbaall in July. |
