Our defence is suspect even at qualifier level, so clear out all the deadwood and buy a whole new defence with the profit from last year, otherwise it's a waste of time.

Then I would be a bit more confident.
Doubt there will any changes to the squad between now and the qualifiers which start in about 10 weeks time. Any serious transfer activity will happen in late august. We go into these games with the squad we've got. Any two centre back pairing from Boyota, Ajer and Simunovic is not the best if you want to have confidence about getting through these 4 ties. If Gordon and/or Lustig gets injured and we have to play De Vries/Hendry, it really is daunting.
There will be at least a couple of signings well before August as there has been virtually every season before.

First games in CL and EL are last few days in June, that's just preliminary rounds.

We start playing 10/11 of July.

Given the spectacular European debuts by many newly signed players over the years I`m up for four brand new ones at the same time this coming season.

What`s a CL qualifier without shampooting yourself.

Yep, I know. I just meant good signings that are ready to improve the team. I know there will be some movement. But I hope not the kind of movement that brought compper and Hendry, for example. We need better than that. Well probably get JohnMcGinn before July.

I was just agreeing with the previous post that the area of the team that puts our chances of getting through a couple of tough qualifying games at risk, is the defence. I think we are good enough in every other area to get past any of the teams quoted.

I hope you are right that some transfer activity will significantly improve us before July, but I'm not holding my breath.

All that said, I love these games in the summer nights at Celtic Park. Can't wait

Quoting limited to 3 levels deep
Never said it didn't get tougher. What I did say and will say again, is that the 1st qualifier is a glorified friendly that the reserves will win.
Malmö just got pumped 3-0 in Swedish cup final. They're gash this year, only the other 19 or so to worry about.
We're only in May and they've already been pumped 3-0 three times

UEFA have published the regulations for next season's tournaments. Confirms pretty much what we already knew, but there were a couple of changes we didn't know about.

- The Europa winner is now given Pot 1 status in the group stage, replacing the champions of the nation ranked 7th. So that's Porto no longer in Pot 1.

- The Champions route of qualifying in the Europa is gonna be mental. Seeding won't be done by the usual coefficient. You're only seeded for the round after you're knocked out of CL qualifying, then unseeded for the rest. It means that the 2nd round of EL qualifying will have 17 seeds and 3 non-seeds. They'll draw 3 seeds to play the 3 non-seeds, then it's an open draw. The playoff round will have 6 seeds, but 10 non-seeds.

Here is the 1st in a load of tweets about it.

So if we get knocked out early in the CL qualifiers we will potentially have a harder route to the group stages in the Europa?

It depends on who else is knocked out. It should be easier, given that it's teams eliminated from the CL qualifiers that we'd face. But it could become a bit of a lottery if some of the bigger names are knocked out early.

I’m a bit tired, so forgive me this question, if it’s daft.

You said the co-efficient is now based on club only, then you’re talking on Twitter about country co-efficients. Does the country one apply or not?

Country ranking determines how many clubs you have and what round they enter in.

The club's ranking determines their seeding in that round and that is now based on the club's performance only as they have removed the country component.

So we've gained from the second one but still hamstrung by Scotland being shampooe in the first.

This.

What happened up until this season was that our ranking as a club was based on the coefficient points we earned ourselves, with 20% of the national coefficient added on to it. That didn't help up, because the other Scottish clubs don't produce many points. It benefited clubs in bigger nations who might not feature in European competition every season - they always got 20% of their national coefficient every season, even if they didn't play a single european game. That's no longer the case.

We nor any other Scottish club has goal line technology installed. Does that mean we will have to get it installed if we reach the group stages. And if we don’t qualify for a few years after that we will be sitting on a white elephant as it can’t be used domestically

Just had a quick Google and the price of the tech is relatively low compared to the rewards for qualifying. Stadiua need to meet certain criteria to play in Europe, this isn't a particularly onerous one IMO.

That's it official. Liverpool's win today means that Celtic will be seeded for all qualifying rounds of the CL next season, should we manage to avoid getting knocked out along the way.

Any chance we had of getting out of Pot 4 in the group stage, should we get there, has all but evaporated. We'd need a hell of a string of results to go in our favour to make Pot 3 now.
