Not sure why we need to give him an extension. He's about to turn 28 and he's contracted for the next 3 seasons. I think Rodgers is prone to handing out deals and fees through sentimentality, and there's an air of that about this.
When, at 29 and 30, once Edouard and Dembele are gone, he'll still be here scoring for fun. He's happy, we're happy. Win-win.

I'd be delighted if he signed a new deal. As good a 3rd choice striker as we could hope to have.
3rd choice striker ?

If Dembele stays then aye, he's third choice. Can't see it myself tbh, though.

When you say 3rd choice, you actually mean 3rd choice for certain football matches. And considering each season we lose one of two strikers to injury at one point along the way, it doesn’t really matter what imaginary striker rating you give him.

He’s a vital squad player, like Dembele and Edouard.

Leigh Griffiths has warned he needs to be playing regular football and wants to establish himself as Celtic's first-choice striker.
"Competition for places is always good,” Griffiths said. “But we only play one upfront and as a striker you want to be selfish.
"You want that starting jersey and you want to make it your own. You just need to take your chance when you get it.
"Everybody wants to play football. But it's not only about the 11 players that start the game, it's also about the 11 players that finish.
"I'm at the time in my career where I need to be playing regular football. Hopefully when I do get that starting jersey I'll make it my own."

3rd choice striker, as in third choice for certain football matches where Dembele and Edouard are available.

Pretty much won the league for us, by himself, when Deila was the manager.

Don't think we should forget that.

Shame.
I don't think it is that, folk being honest that the two lads in front of him are better for the way we play. LG still has a lot to offer but he won't be first choice.

Griffiths faces a fight for a starting spot this season after Odsonne Edouard’s loan deal became permanent in a record £10million switch earlier this summer.

Moussa Dembele could yet leave — but Rodgers will want three strikers at his disposal.

Griffiths joked that he turned the air blue when Edouard signed but he’s confident they will all be given a chance.

He said: “It doesn’t get any easier for me. Moussa came in two years ago, then Odsonne last season.

“So it gets more difficult. The manager keeps putting hurdles in my way and I need to step over them all the time.

“But I will do my best to stay in the starting line-up.

“What was my reaction when Odsonne signed? You couldn’t publish it! Was it, ‘Oh dear?’ Well, words to that effect.

“But, no, that’s purely from a selfish perspective.

“You want to play as many games as you can.

“From a team point of view, it’s great that we can bring in that kind of quality player.

“We have earned a lot of money from the last two Champions Leagues and the manager should be allowed to spend it.

“Odsonne has great potential. Like Moussa, he’s big, fast and strong. He can finish, too.

“You want to have the best players so that you have the best chance of succeeding.

“My aim is to build up my fitness and stay injury-free for the Champions League qualifiers. I need to apply myself and take a chance when I get it.

“The manager has always said that everyone is going to get game-time.

“At times it will be difficult sitting on the sidelines but, when called upon, you need to take the chance.

“You need to be ready to come on and make an impact.

“If you do that, you could be starting the next game.”

Griffiths hasn’t always been a regular under Rodgers but claims the Celtic boss has taken his game to a new level.

He said: “You’re always going to improve under a manager like Brendan Rodgers.

“The way he conducts himself on and off the park is exemplary.

“It’s the same with the backroom staff and everyone around the club.

“We go about our business with a certain style.

“We need to maintain that this season. I’ve changed. My life is completely different on and off the park.

“You can’t leave anything on the pitch. You need to give 100 per cent. If you don’t, you will be found out.

“Craig Gordon touched on that the other day. There is no hiding place now.

“Every training session is filmed and the manager will look back on it afterwards.

“He will have a look at who has been doing what and they know everything from the GPS and heart-rate monitors.

“If it’s not been good enough and you don’t cover the right distances, then you are told.

“Yes, I have more bad days at home when I’m not playing.

“But things are rosy when everything is going well and the team is winning.”

Meanwhile, Griffiths is confident he will soon put pen to paper on a new long-term Celtic deal.

He said: “We are still speaking behind the scenes.

“We are not far away now and hopefully it will get done.

“When I speak to the manager, he always says I am a big part of his plans.

“As long as he is at Celtic, he wants me here and that’s good enough for me.”

LEIGH GRIFFITHS insists he can be the man to fire Celtic to the Champions League.

The Scotland striker faces a fight with Moussa Dembele and £10million Odsonne Edouard to get a game.

But Griff has told Brendan Rodgers he can depend on him as the Hoops prepare for four qualifying rounds.

He said: “I do quite like the pressure of being the main man and getting goals, whether it’s in league or Champions League.

“Whenever I do play, in whatever competition, I do seem to come to the fore when we are under pressure.

“This season will be no different.

“I need to work hard to get into that starting XI but if I do that, then I need to take my chance.

“People can say I’m third choice, but if you ask the manager then I don’t think he’d say that anyone is first, second or third choice.

“He would say that he has three quality strikers who can all do different jobs.”

Every interview he gives that mentions the competition he faces for a starting place betrays why he isn't, and won't be, the number one striker at the club while Rodgers is here. Its not just talent and attributes, although that would leave him third in pecking order, it is his attitude and his readiness to share that attitude with those outside the changing room.

I don't think Edouard is a better striker than Griffiths right now. He will be through time and further development as he has so much ability.....but right now, if I wanted goals in my team, I would play Lee ahead of him. Edouard came on leaps and bounds last season, but he's not the finished article yet. There are enough games in a season however for all three to get game iMessage.

I would agree. I think Eduoard has the potential to be the best out of the three of them, and he put in some real quality performances towards the end of the season. But nothing that Griffiths hasn't done on many occasions throughout his time at the club, and against better opposition in many cases.

I do think Eddie offers more versatility in the attacking positions than either Dembele or Griffiths. Can see him taking up Sinclair's role or playing just off one of the others at times as well.

I think Edouard is better at the things Rodgers values more, particularly the physical aspects.

We are lucky to have 3 quality strikers to call on. Moussa had is ups and downs last seasons and there were games where he was just not at the races. Eddie is young and learning and there will be some inconsistency there. A fit Leigh gives us other options and he has a great attitude. It is a squad game and they will all play an important role next season, though I still have a feeling that Moussa will go before the transfer window closes. The time to borrow is when your star striker gets injured and you only have dross on the bench (Ciftci). That won't happen while we have these 3 gems.

Dont think theres that much wrong with what he said to be honest. He is desperate to be first choice and he is always honest about it.

if he was sitting there saying " I dont care if I am first pick, as long as the team is doing well", people might applaud his political skills, but we would be calling him a bullshampooter as we know that is just not our Leigh.
