Bizarre situation signing him.
People keep saying this. It's pish.

We needed cover at the back due to injuries to centre backs and no Emilio. Ajer wasn't considered ready at the time, and Compper has decent pedigree as a centre half and can cover left back - that's why we signed him. The fact it hasn't worked out doesn't make the actual act baffling.

Signing for the position wasn't bizarre at all. Signing Compper for the position was. We needed someone to step in immediately.

Whatever the various causes he wasn't able to do that. Added to that he was effin cup tied, and it should have been the time to sign and bed in someone who would improve us for CL. We know how difficult it is to do that at this time of year and it's still a problem position for us now. I've lost track of whether he was injured the last half of the season or just deemed pish but it doesn't look great either way.

This has all the makings of a situation where he steps in and plays a blinder in a tight CL qualifier and is immediately hailed as the next big thing since the last big thing. I hope he does it but I'm not putting my mortgage on it, yet. Hopefully we are still looking at a big eff off centre half though.

Wait - I'm confused. Did we sign him as cover or did we sign him to take Ajer's position in team? It can't be both.

First pre-season friendly tomorrow at 5.30.
Be very interesting to watch, in particular Marvin.

I'm thinking we'll be looking at 343 this season & the trial of the RWB Hull City freebie, adds to my hunch.
Especially with Boyata (almost) certainly not being in the squad for the first competitive games, I'd expect we'd want to go with:

--------Gordon

--Ajer--Jozo--Compper

Either that or trying KT or Hendry in there, but I doubt we've given up on Marvin, soon see.

Wonder if that trialist will be given game time straight away. No other options at RB tbf apart from Ralston

I guess that's why we've taken him.

I really like this time of year & that's why I've got Celtic TV.
You see all the training videos, interviews & live pre-season games.
I get excited at how we can improve & the interviews with the development or sport science guys is great too.
Sounding like a salesman  but I'm really looking forward to watch the game to see what new tactics, players, formations we might be trying.

I'm really hoping Compper comes good & gives us a wee boost, he gets some stick & even Brendan too for signing him.
Same goes with Morgan, Bain & Hendry.

Ajer came in after the Hearts walloping, and had looked pretty shaky until we pumped Aberdeen. Prior to that, Boyata, Jozo and Erik had all been injured. We definitely needed another centre half, as Erik was for the off. He was signed pretty quickly as well - none of the usual floofing about, so was obviously wanted.
Celtic 'cover' is generally someone who'll be challenging for the XI. The guy got injured and has obviously taken a fair bit longer to get sorted than usual - I don't see why people are looking for some kind of conspiracy.

Looking at the end of the season as well - we had Boyata trying to get into the Belgium squad, and on form, so resting him wasn't an option, and Ajer was on a roll himself, so why drop him to get Compper fit for a few weeks, then give him a month off?

Nocarrot knows, but the simple answer seems the most obvious to me. No need to complicate matters, as per old William of Ockham.

Aye, not sure it's a conspiracy or complicated; as you say - it has just been a poor signing.

You don't sign a 33 year old player in January in a position in which you are weak and expect them to make 1 appearance in 5 months. But when you are signing players at our finance level, it can happen. We have pissed away millions on similar stories.

I can think of plenty of signings from Jock Stein - Alex Ferguson & Jose Mourinho that haven't worked out for a variety of reasons....money spent has little to do with it.

Compper hasn't got off to the best of starts, but I'm willing to give him the opportunity to show what he can do...hopefully a Pat Stanton type year - 18 months will do me fine.

If not then we simply chalk it up as a mistake, learn from it and move on

Looked as tidy and comfortable as you could look in the first 45 minutes of the first pre-season game against a third division Austrian outfit. One pass over hit but other than that he looked fine.

Asked if the German could now nail down a place in the team, Rodgers replied: 'Time will tell.

'We have a lot of young, exciting players in that position along the back three.

'They are fast, quick, strong and aggressive. They are all alert, developing and improving but it is great.

'We have a good fight on with them all. We will get them through pre-season and then see where we are.'

Hardly bursting with enthusiasm about the player, but I guess he has to play that off against the other players in contention for that position.
