So let's get this straight. We have been playing 2 games a week since August. We get to the 3 week winter break where we have no games as it is a time to recuperate and re-charge the batteries and during thee 3 weeks we lose 2 players to injury. You couldn't make it up.

Seriously though we need to look at the amount of hamstring and calf strains we are getting.

Nobody's fault or anything I guess but you gotta laugh - we went into this window (and summer) knowing we desperately need a CB or two. So far we've got rid of one and replaced him with someone who is immediately injured for the next month

yes.

We had a tough fixture list in December that caught up with us a bit, but in terms of progress, we're miles ahead of where we were eighteen months ago.
I think our team is powder puff. IMO the only 4 players who would fight for the jersey were Brown, Tierney, Griffiths and Sviatchenko !! The rest hide when the going gets tough

To be honest I don't know if Compper is any good or not but I can't see the point in paying more than £1m for a player who will be 33 soon and can't play in Europe till next season.

I reckon the value of our squad is lower now than at any time in the last 10 years
Right so...

Even taking paper talk

Dembele £18m (will go for more)
Griffiths £7m
Tierney £20m (will go for more)
Simunovic £8m

£53m for 4 players.

Before you add in Forrest, Sinclair, Ntcham, Rogic et al

You’ll need to tell me the team we had in the last 10 years that was worth more than that (remember Wanyama and Van Dijk never played in same team).

Your 10 year period starts with great players like Naylor, Caldwell, Pressley, Doumbe.

I will check in as I’m generally interested. I think you may be Ian McCall’s financial adviser.

Maybe it’s just me but a “calf injury” and out for a month ? Really ? There’s not even an indication that he’s pulled his calf.

Bit of deep heat on it, stretch it off, maybe take a few days off training and go for a swim. Then get your arse back training. Modern footballers are soft as shampooe. Out for weeks and months at a time for knocks and niggles. Roy Keane called it spot on with this kind of thing.

Frustration not all aimed at Compper btw, just our injury situation in particular as well as the prima-donna attitude of modern football players. Spare me the pushing themselves to the limit patter as well.
Does the fact that he's out for a month with a calf injury not indicate that he's maybe pulled his calf?

Kris Commons has his say. ;)

Marvin Compper's injury so soon after joining Celtic justifies fears about his ability to cope with the intensity of play demanded by Brendan Rodgers.

So says former Celtic midfielder Kris Commons, who said last month he found the signing from RB Leipzig "baffling".

The defender has been ruled out for a month with a training-ground injury.

"You have to push your body through the barriers," Commons said of Rodgers' training sessions. "At nearly 33, it is a big ask to get to those levels."

Commons thinks Celtic's training methods have risks as well as benefits.

"The intensity that Brendan demands of your training session, not just for two minutes, it's literally 60-70 minutes every single morning," he told BBC Scotland.

"If you can't replicate that every single day or on the days when he's wanting it, it's simple - you won't play.

"So you have to push your body through the barriers where he needs. That's just not sprinting - it's distance covered.

"At the start of the season, everybody was saying this was the fittest Celtic team we've ever seen, Scott Brown looks a different player, he's developed Callum McGregor, Stuart Armstrong, James Forest looks like he's worth £10-12m nowadays.

"But you only have to look at Leigh Griffiths, who's a very fit boy. He's picked up numerous calf injuries.

"You look at Scott Sinclair. He's picked up a hamstring injury. You look at Moussa Dembele. I think he's pulled his hamstring three times."

Commons was concerned that Compper, signed for £1m on a two-and-a-half year contract but cup-tied for the Europa League, would not be able to cope.

"I just thought it was a higher risk bringing in a 32-year-old defender who is not going to play in Europe this season and who has been injury prone," he added.

"When you sign players in the 32-33 year old bracket, there has to be a little worry about injuries or recurring injuries and, looking at his playing stats since 2012, he has barley racked up 100 appearances in nearly six years.

"Celtic are playing 60-70 games every single season. Compper is averaging about 20."

It was then put to Rodgers that “there is a particular scrutiny on you with Europe in mind to strengthen [in central defence]”.

“No, there is not. Scrutiny by whom?” he snapped.

By at least Commons himself, it was suggested?

“Ok, move on. [before under his breath and disdainfully saying] Kris Commons…”

I don't know how much training Commons did with Rodgers but surely he has some idea as to what the gaffer wants from the team. He says that Rodgers wants 60-70 minutes of flat out effort from the players. He makes a fair point about the amount of injuries we seem to picking up on the training ground. It's very worrying that we've had this guy in board for two weeks and he's already out for a month. I really hope it's not a problem going forward.
