CELTIC are hoping to convince Swedish international Mikael Lustig to commit his future to the club.

The 29-year-old right-back’s current contract is up at the end of the season, and he will be free to speak to other clubs next month.

But boss Brendan Rodgers has spoken to Lustig, above, and told him he wants him to stay.

Rodgers said: “Mikael is one I definitely want to keep. The club is in discussions with his agent.

“He’s an important player for us, he’s one of the pillars of the group.

“In any group, there are four or five key players within it and he’s definitely one.

“He’s a great character, his commitment to training is fantastic and he’s a superb professional.

“And while he has good banter with the lads and he’s a fun guy, he knows when to focus and every single game he’s up for.”

This could be the last major contract of Lustig’s career, but Rodgers is confident terms will be agreed.

He said: “When you get to his age you want to make sure everything is right, it has to be right for you.

“If he plays say to he’s 35, he’s got another six years.

“That’s 72 pay packets left in your life. That’s it, then he’s done and that has to last him for the rest of his life.

“He has maybe six years left from the beginning of next season, so he wants to get as much in there as he can. That’s the game.”

I love him but it's painful watching him run.
That and his lack of awareness around the back post are my worries about Lustig over the next few years - He has nothing in him to get back when he is caught up the park.

His wife is battling depression.
Hope she gets all the help and support she needs.

I DON’T RECOGNISE MYSELF Celtic star Mikael Lustig’s wife opens her heart about her battle with depression
Brave Josefin, 27, who runs a fashion label, told of her shame at her diagnosis and her fears over the long road ahead of her - despite the love and support of her Hoops ace hubby

"Exclusive" story there, which is Tait effing paraphrasing her own blog post, framing it (almost) as an interview

What an absolute rag.
The sad thing is this actually passes for news in some quarters, as she's the wife of someone in the public eye. Tabloid journalism at it's worst but then someone must be reading it, which makes them worse.

Swedish tabloid Aftonbladet have made a story out of that bit about 72 pay checks left, of course, because that is what tabloids do

I doubt there will be a club out there willing to give him a mega pay deal even if he is available on a free. He's worth keeping around as Rodgers obviously rates him and in future he can be a utility player.

I think he'll sign a new contract and become back-up to a new RB come the start of the 18/19 season perhaps sooner.

Rodgers clearly wants him to stay and he seems a big personality. Also loves Celtic.

Over the piece he's been fantastic for us.

I thought he was extremely poor today worst ive seen him. He made Mckay look like ronaldo by standing off him from the first minute but his passing, pace and decision making was woeful.

Liked him a lot in days gone by but god he had a shocker.
