Alex McLeish was a Argentinian international called Carlos Javier Mac Allister.

Sounds like one of those players that'd turn up in FIFA 09. Back when the computer would just throw together some names for the new youngsters generated.

You'd end up with guys called stuff like Barry Lima de Muller and he'd be from Northern Ireland.
Loads of British Islanders though moved to Argentina and Uruguay over the years though. There was a Uruguayan player about 15 years ago called Fabian O'Neill. Think the Argentina teams of the 80s also had someone called Brown on the squad.
Jose Brown, scored in the Final.

Chile have a team named O'Higgins after their founding father. I think these folk in centuries past got around a whole lot more than people generally imagine, I believe the Argentine League had a Scottish influence right from the off.

Its the same with that Sebastian Coates that plays for Liverpool (Though I know he is Uraguayan).

The English commontators pronounce his name Co-a-Tez. His dad is Scottish and his surname is actual Coates, as in jackets.

Probably the same way that in the computer game FIFA '97, they kept pronouncing Lambert's name at Dortmund the 'French' way, as they clearly couldn't comprehend that a Scotsman could be playing for Dortmund at the time.

The Scots basically invented football in South America. Almost every league there can trace back their roots to a Scotsman bringing the game over. The Alex Bellos book, Futebol: The Brazilian Way, goes into the examples in Btazil in particular, but most of the continent was introduced to football by the Scottish. Presumably, at some stage, we'll go back and introduce them to, "booze and burds" so they too, can make the transition to being shyte at football?

I remember reading an article on MacAllister years back in World Soccer. They asked him if he knew anything about his Scottish heritage and he had no clue whatsoever (someone show him pictures of Scots  ) He was a driving force for Boca (I think?) in their league title quest. Kind of a, I hate to say, Bomber Broon type player. Represented Argentina, if I remember correctly, but not at any tournaments.
I remember BBC Alba doing a documentary on the Scots in Patagonia a few years ago. Apparently there is a heavy Scottish and Gaelic influence on some of the Spanish spoken in Patagonia such as using the word "Aye" as an affirmative.

Juan Perón was also of Scottish ancestry.... :ph43r:

Been to see O'Higgins play... saw them beat Everton 5-2. There is also a Rangers in Chile, named after some defunct Scottish team.

Read about this somewhere else. The guy that punched the ref had been sent off the previous week and his team put him on the field under a different name for this game. No wonder they resigned, they would have been booted out anyway.

Not really a strange story but one worth highlighting. Albion Rovers offering a 'pay what you can' season ticket option:
