Moves afoot to possiblly bring the 48 team WC forward by 4 years to Qatar 2022. Can't help but think that if it goes forward it's to force Qatar's hand. It'll be stretch for them to hold a 32 team tournament, doubt there would be anyway for them to host a 48 team tournament.

There is precedent for this sort of thing, Colombia was originally picked to host the 1986 WC, but had to bow out when FIFA decided to make tournaments 24 teams instead of 16, after the 1978 WC.

According to the BBC, EPL clubs have voted against using VAR next season.
"The technology's there, use it!"

Might never have to hear that again, instant bonus.

I detest it, I thought it would be crap from many years back and it's been worse than I'd ever imagined. I'd still like to have it used in Scotland for obvious reasons, but nowhere else.

Seen enough of it in slower moving sports, where it can be really useful and add to the drama (cricket) or takes years off you waiting (NFL where replay has went downhill). It's handy for Rugby and they use it pretty well but there's no place for it in football, I was taken aback at how poor the tech seemed to be, both in presentation and accuracy. The fact they hadn't an official 'period' or break whilst the replays were looked at was really poor preparation, the ref just standing there, crowd clueless, shady feedback, everything the cricket replays avoid.

They could, and should in this day and age have done a better job but it's just not for me.

Not watched much EPL games this year.

If we are going to use it 'successfully' then I believe the whole structure of the match itself would have to change, once you introduce tech then it will be adapted, argued over, improved and so on but it will only ever become more and more present.

It could lead to time outs, ad breaks on television, multiple stoppages, it will be a different game and that would suit some for sure, I'll remain sceptical and can't see me ever changing my mind on the concept.

Had to check on the interweb as I thought he'd died years ago.

Seems he was offered a contract by Napoli in the late '80s.

Can you imagine him out on the town with Maradona?

Bundesliga relegation battle. Mainz were awarded a penalty against Freiburg after the referee had blown his whistle for half time; the video assistant referee pointed a handball out to the referee. The Mainz players were already in the dressing room, and 7 players including goalie had to return. The penalty had to be converted directly. Technically correct and VAR is in use until the final whistle. The question is whether referee got the instructions from the VAR while he was still on the pitch which is the rule- if he has left the pitch they're looking at a replay. Interesting one to follow.

VAR has worked pretty well in both Germany and Australia in the games I've watched. Even for things like this, the key thing is whether the right decision was made in the end.

Astounded the English don't want to use it at all.
