FORMER Celtic striker Tony Watt confirms he is an free agent and has left Belgium club Oud-Heverlee Leuven.

Watt joined the second division side during the summer on a one year contract with the option of an extra year but has failed to become a regular in the starting line-up.

Former Leicester City manager Nigel Pearson took over as manager in September 2017 and the ex-Hearts striker said he failed to get game time after Pearson came in.

The 24-year-old confirmed the news on his Twitter saying: “One chapter closed. Another one opens.

“Thank you @ohl_official for the time I spent! Unfortunately I never played much football when the new manager came in but we left it on good terms. That’s football. I’ll have time to see my next step now!”

With only a few months left of the season Watt has now become a free agent and has confirmed he will be coming back to Scotland while he waits for a new club.

He added in another tweet: “I’m predicting some negativity so I’ll delete the Twitter app for 48 hours troops have a good one! Back to Scotland now.”

Did Tony Watt not say after leaving hearts that he didn't have any interest in playing in Scotland anymore, or words to that effect.

I wonder if this will bring into focus the issue of head injuries in football.

Well the recent debate has all been about the heading of a football and possible long term implications of this. Not sure if a clash of heads, as his injury was,is other than an unfortunate accident.

There was a discussion about repeated heading of the ball yea but I'd expect the risk of head injury by contesting headers will be brought into focus. In many ways that seems more dangerous than heading the ball.

I see your point but changing the rules to outlaw contesting a ball with the head would change the fundamentals of the game completely to make it unrecognisable as the same sport. Mason's injury was at the extreme end of the head injury spectrum as regards football. Petr Cech is the last player I recall in thois country suffering such a severe injury and that was nothing to do with heading. He now has to wear a safety helmet i believe for insurance purposes.

In contact sport you will always get bad injuries and fatalities from time to time. Our own John Thomson springs to mind.

Yea, I take your point. All I'm saying is that the act of two players running towards an object and jumping headfirst to contact make contact with it might be numbered. Football as a whole certainly doesn't take concussion seriously enough. It's one of the only sports where you can get knocked out and be allowed to continue. A wee drink of water and you're good to go again.

There should be no fatalities in sport, especially not football as a result from injury.
