I was at a night with Jim Craig last night at Celtic Park and very good it was too. Good food and good craic from him along with a mini tour of the stadium and the ground. It was a great Christmas present.

Only concern was that they've redone the pitch to have the artificial grass put in and it looks really bare. No idea how it will be ready to play on next week as there's no real grass there at all.

I normally record MOTD and watch it on the Sunday morning (fast forwarding through Lineker, Wright et al's babbling). One thing caught my eye this morning - when they put up the match stats at the end of each match there's a box marked "expected goals". WTF is that about?

French ref runs across a Nantes player, falls to the ground, kicks out at the player, then gives the player a second yellow and sends him off

The referee admitted in his match report that he shouldn't have given a second yellow to the player.

At least, the red card should be rescinded. The ref is suspended and his case will be reviewed. Not the first time a French ref, this one in particular, has an inappropriate behaviour on the pitch, but first time there could be a punishment.

Nantes players and staff are to praise in this incident. No anger, no abuse, they just remained professional.

He didn't mention that in his match report. Maybe he thought no-one had seen it.

According to Nantes captain, Chapron argued he slipped and made an accidental contact with the player.

Because Tony Chapron got away with many unsporting behaviours in the past. Lots of players and coaches have asked for his ban for years. He's very aggressive towards them, especially from teams low in the table. A few examples :

- in 2009, he told Valenciennes players : "I'm going to screw you, until you get relegated." No evidence and he sues the club owner in courts for defamation.
- in 2013, he showed his finger to Gaz Ajaccio supporters and told a member of staff to GTF. Caught on camera, no action.
- in 2007, he shouted Nancy captain to shut his effing mouth. Witnesses from both teams, no action.
- in 2009, Nice and Monaco captains claimed he abused players from both sides during a match. No action.

There were many other incidents, the Balotelli controversial sending off for instance. He has often given red cards for players who asked him the reason for a decision without being offensive. And he angrily refused to give Zlatan the ball of his first hat trick in France.

He sounds like a good fit for the SPL.

A few years ago, another controversial French referee, Philippe Kalt, elbowed a player. He got a one-game suspension and could officiate in the League Cup final days later.

Aye, Claude Colombo, the Celta game at CP on the road to Seville. French Ligue 1 broadcaster gave him the Marcel d'Or award for being the worst French ref.

The referee association of that time was dismantled by the French Football Federation for allegations of corruption and embezzlement.

The Championship was the third most-watched league in European football during the 2016-17 season.

The Premier League tops the list with total attendances of more than 13m, with Germany's Bundesliga second.

England's second tier, with an total of more than 11m, ranks higher than Spain's La Liga, Italy's Serie A and France's Ligue 1.

I'm impressed. I really am considering some of the teams are just not very good.

That's the power of marketing for you. Although the fact that they play something like 44 league games a season in the English "Championship" probably helps too.

From what was presumably the same set of statistics, I noticed yesterday that Scotland has the highest percentage of its population attending games in all of Europe.
