If they were in any way concerned about competition (lets face it, Celtic probably are not ) they might do better than to address the enormous monetary imbalance through a series of binding measures. In seasons when Scotland's champions - in other words, Celtic - qualify for the Champions League, then they forego 75% of their earnings for winning the previous year's SPFL. Small beer in the grand scheme of things when you have guaranteed that you'll pocket £30m. Put the money accrued into a fund that clubs can apply to for improving facilities. Specifically on gate receipts, let clubs that visit Celtic Park (and Ibrox) retain the majority of what they make in gate revenue accrued from their own fans, less any proportionate cost of policing, stewarding and damages. Might encourage more to turn out. Small changes that will never redress any sort of "balance", but which might actually kickstart incremental improvement in going to watch a top flight game in Scotland. If they want to change things then they need to start marketing the game better and looking at getting as much money into the game as possible. |

So Petrie doesn't have plans to introduce it like you said. No need for the smart-arse reply, or the clique brown-nosing. There seems to be a hell of a lot of both on here, it's very noticeable. |

If the SPFL were serious about marketing the professional game properly in Scotland, they would not have invited Barry Hearn. The head of Marketing for the MLS maybe, but not Barry Hearn. Him and his sport are the equivalent of the Daily Star: bang out scantily clad burdz on the arms of middle aged fat blokes throwing darts, adorn them with outlandish nicknames, garments and entry sequences. Layover an OTT commentary that makes you think you are watching the pinnacle of sporting endeavour and not just a 50 year old bloke throwing a dart at a board. And make sure those watching get plenty watered down lager and screen time, letting the dullards drone away to the same tune 50 times a night during the "spectacle", as they hold up their witty placards. He recognised darts was an amateur "sport" played in dark, smoky rooms by mulleted men. He turned the lights on, pushed the volume up, sold it to Sky and made it all "professional". Marketing genius right enough. Edited by Forza, 31 Oct 2017, 12:33 PM.

There's no need to change the leagues. Scottish football will get better when Scottish teams get better. That can best be achieved with good coaching, and while it may cost a few quid to attract and keep good coaches (and players) in Scotland that would be easier done if it weren't for the fact that 99% of the people involved in running Scottish football are incompetent arsewits when it comes to marketing and to negotiating commercial contracts. Giving (say) St Johnstone a chance to win the SPL will not make Scottish football better. They'll just get pumped out of the CL qualifiers instead of getting pumped out of the EL qualifiers. It'd mean a bit more money for them of course and I'm sure they could put that to good use, but it does eff all to address the roots of the problems with Scottish football as a whole. |

He might be a bit of a wide boy, but he took a dying sport and made it marketable. I think the trick is to look at all options, not look down your nose at the ones you don’t like. |

The most stupid feckin idea from within Scottish football authorities who appear to be full of stupid feckin people at the top. They don't want to drag the game up, they want to drag us down. You want to do something radical? then get us 16 professional teams in a league and the rest can be semi-pro trying to get to that level. Going to sound hunish but there are far too many so called professional teams in this country and we need them cut. Personally I'd have summer football to. |

In Barry Hearn's case that's been to create many more tournament variations of the same thing, with TV rights that can be sold to Sky or BT and sponsorship that can be sold to a betting company. I'd say the SPFL, with its Group Stage League Cup sponsored by betting, its league sponsored by betting, and cross-border Challenge Cup thingy, have ripped the arse out of the Barry Hearn playbook. It's still pish. |

Hibs are getting it together off the pitch. 20k possible attendance at Easter Rd. Hearts are slowly sorting themselves out, that is if their stadium doesn't bankrupt them. Aberdeen will hopefully have a new 20k stadium in place in future. Those three could theoretically be better off and stronger in the coming years. An improvement in finances should see a rise in quality of players and therefore a bigger challenge to us from more than one team. If sevco somehow sort themselves out (aye right), then that would potentially be 4 teams capable of challenging to a degree. However, we are in a completely unique position, challenge or not. We are a football superpower in just about every way except the access to the super finance of Real, Barca, Bayern, the EPL etc. Unless there is radical change we will continue to dominate in Scotland and the gap will remain to the rest of Scottish football. Changing the league system will do nothing to enhance the quality, it will only paper over cracks. I feel the greatest hope for Scottish football is BR and his thinking and personality influencing the rest to improve their lot within their constraints. |

As those on Twitter are probably aware that a poster is saying that Sky is going to drop the SPFL. I can say with reasonable certainty that will not happen. The poster in question keeps using BARB as a source for falling viewing figures, however BARB is not widely acknowledged as a barometer for viewing figures in the industry as Sky, ITV, BT and the BBC often use their own information for viewing figures. BARB only really exists for a guideline for advertisers that are not privy from the internal numbers from the broadcasters. The supposed reforms that Petrie is proposing will not happen. The broadcasters want their 4 Glasgow derbies, Edinburgh derbies and games against Aberdeen a season. If they cannot guarantee this then I cannot see any nominal increase in the value of the SPFL TV rights. |

They have been making a gimmick of the League since the inception of the Premier Division, the SPL just took it further down the black hole. Think tanks, fiascos with stadia, Livi and Gretna, tv deal stupidity, ridiculous overspending during the 00's with youth disregarded. Supporters are so used now to constant revisions and being told we need to play teams four times a year they are dreaming up their own Mickey Mouse ideas themselves!!! Football is a simple game complicated by bureaucracy, in Scotland the suits have had carte blanche to ruin our game. Let's recognize that these changes have never borne fruit and get back to playing each other twice with some of our larger provincial clubs involved again. Hibs, Hearts, Dundee United have all had to survive outwith the PL on a couple of occasions each now, the argument for these clubs needing to play Celtic four times a season is dead. I don't want to be harsh on clubs who have done all they can over the years such as Ross County, Partick, Hamilton, ICT, there is a place for them in a larger League but we could sure do with Dunfermline, St Mirren, Dundee United, Morton and Falkirk involved in a proper, normal football environment. |

Again, it's about looking at all the possible options. The only ways we are ever going to get a "better" league here, and therefore more sponsors/tv money, which leads to more fans, then even more sponsors, and so on and so on, are : Having a more competitive league (which means teams who can win it, not just fulfil fixture lists) Getting a better quality of player in the league. These things have to be done as an uphill battle due to already having a much bigger, stronger, richer league right next door, which is already hoovering up our kids both as talents and particularly as supporters. When I was in school, everyone supported us or the huns, except for like 4 people due to family reasons, supporting Killie or Aberdeen. Now, tons of kids cut about Glasgow more interested in Chelsea and Arsenal than anything happening up here. All options should be analysed, I think. Someone said a playoff may just have a grand final of us vs huns 9/10 times. Well, we'd currently have it as 10/10 times historically, so that would still be an improvement. A Leicester story will never happen up here. Ever. |

All options shouldn't be considered, we've spent forty years doing that, let's make our League a proper League again, a normal division. In the seventies in the wake of the three day week the Premier League might have seemed viable, when Aberdeen and United reached European Finals it may even have seemed genius but it was an illusion, those players, those fantastic Managers were borne from the previous system which led to a Scottish club being crowned Champions of Europe. C'mon to eff, let's get back to normality, the experiment failed years ago.

It would actually be bad for the game when you consider there would be no chance of clubs getting their £400k for youth development from UEFA. |
